Premier League 2017-2018

Palace up to 12th despite having had significant issues with injuries. What a great job Hodgson is doing.

What makes it better is the slagging him and moyes were given from the pundits and fans of their own clubs.

Its almost like they wanted hodgson to be totally incompetent rather than admit that the england national team aren’t that good.

Same with moyes at Sunderland. That was a sinking ship anyway. Changing managers all the time there was about as relevant as re-arranging the deckchairs on the titanic.

Watching Match of the Day here, and Huddersfield's performance yesterday looks to have been laughably bad.

The 1st goal especially. Teams seem to have figured out how to set up against teams playing out from the back, press high and be organised around their penalty area. Surely when the keeper sees how many west ham players are in close proximity around his own team, you disregard that philosophy and aim long so if there is a problem, then your team have a better chance of getting organised and dealing with it. Instead he just hammers it against a man that already had 2 players chasing him down.

Indeed. As you say Sunderland were plummeting and indeed have continued to do so. Not so much re-arranging the deckchairs but re-arranging the icebergs in all honesty.

I hadn't realised Sunderland were bottom of the Championship. Lovely.

On another note, and a minor piece of TV-induced piss-boiling, Sky making a big thing about Harry Kane becoming Spurs' record Premier League goalscorer. This constantly reinforced bollocks that football pre-Sky doesn't count is rather annoying, and get right into the fucking sea.

Watching MotD here... It's going to become seriously tedious if every other post-match interview, from now until whenever the pressure becomes such that they have to introduce it, is going to revolve around VAR and how it could have made everything different and far better.

You also wonder if there's going to be unintended consequences to all this - to the way the game is played, or in creating unrealistically high expectation. Apparently it's used a couple of times a weekend across Serie A - but going on like the way EPL commentators and pundits are they'll be using it every 10-15 minutes in every game. Some issues are blatant, but plenty more will be subjective, and every such case will cause stops in play as well as possible frustration and confusion (in the stands especially).

Tbf maybe it was like this when they looked at replacing umpires with a referee... then side umpires with linesmen... added watches... created stoppage time, introduced 4th officials and so on. Whatever the promise people will still feel mistakes, wrong decisions or errors have been made. Indeed referring to VAR or not will perhaps just join making offside calls or judging dives.
There was a decent article about the use of VAR in When Saturday Comes.

Backs up what you say about the number or uses and relative success. But then as an opponent of VAR, I'm not at all shocked.

Liverpool v Man City today :)

The leagues 2 form sides long unbeaten looking forward to this one.

Hopefully it's a good game but in the grand scheme of things even if Liverpool win Rab you are not getting near winning the title.

Klopps quickly becoming the new Wenger in his targeting of top 4 each season rather than trying to win title.

Not good enough for clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea and United to be out of the title race at this stage.

Intriguing game at Anfield. Not a happy hunting ground for the Citizens.

Match Facts:

Spoiler

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • Manchester City have not won at Anfield since 2003, a run of 16 matches in all competitions.
  • The last time Manchester City did a league double over Liverpool was in the 1936-37 season, a campaign in which they won their maiden top-flight title.
  • City's 5-0 win over Liverpool in September was the first time they had scored five or more goals in a game against the Reds since March 1937.

Liverpool

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in 17 matches in all competitions, their best run under Jurgen Klopp, since losing to Tottenham on 22 October.
  • They have kept nine clean sheets in their last 13 league games at Anfield.
  • Liverpool could remain unbeaten in their opening 12 home matches of a Premier League season for the first time since 2011-12.
  • Their 5-0 defeat by Manchester City earlier in the season was Jurgen Klopp's heaviest defeat in all competitions as Reds manager, and his joint-heaviest ever managerial loss (Mainz were beaten 6-1 by Werder Bremen in October 2006).

Manchester City

  • There have only been five longer unbeaten streaks in the top flight than Manchester City's current run of 30 matches: Arsenal's 49 games in 2003-2004, Nottingham Forest's 42 in 1977-1978, Chelsea with 40 in 2004-2005, Leeds United's 34 in 1968-1969 and Liverpool's 31 in 1987-1988.
  • City could become the first team to win a top-flight match at Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in the same season since Wimbledon in 1986-87. The Dons are the only club to do this since the Second World War.
  • Sergio Aguero has scored in all six home league matches he has played against Liverpool, but he is yet to score at Anfield.
  • Pep Guardiola has become the first manager to win the Premier League Manager of the Month award in four successive months.
SAM's verdict
Most probable score: 1-1 Probability of draw: 27%
Probability of home win: 28% Probability of away win: 45%

The lone striker doesn’t always need to run the channels though if the team is set up right. If he’s got two men wide and someone in behind him it’s about using his physique and brain to find that space in the box and Rooney has done a few times this season and got goals. But then due to injuries or Big Sam’s tinkering he’s been played deeper and been pretty ineffective. However, what I will agree with is that that Everton defence are fucking dreadful.

Problem with that though is that Everton don’t have two wide men of sufficient ability and Rooney’s hold up play has declined to such a level that he can’t be relied upon to be played as a target. He’s certainly scored some goals, but his overall play isn’t good enough to secure a first team spot, IMO.

Rooneys first touch has always been somewhat questionable compared to other top players, with his sharpness and power making up for it. Having lost some of that it's no surprise how his level has dropped. Showed a couple of decent touches with him and Tosun yesterday but is he likely to offer more in behind him than Sigurdsson would? Probably not.
