Are they in your Department or some kind of central team?

Central team.

We've been centralising everything since 2019, and everything has gotten worse.

Prior to 2019, were you personally responsible for all handbook material / info. pertaining to the course(s) you run ?

Yes, I always have been. Whoever runs the course makes the handbook.

The issue here is that *someone* made a new handbook that was a pile of shite and submitted that, rather than just asking for the proper one.

I'm a wee bit confused. You say that handbook production has been centralised since 2019 but the bold bit above implies that you are still responsible for your own h/book but some *random* admin bod (presumably unconnected with your specialism) has just decided to bypass yourself and produce a h/book on your behalf without any consultation ? If that is the case, then there is something seriously wrong within your admin / comms. function. It really beggars belief.

Let me explain.

For courses/modules that are taught, the course leader develops all the material for it on their own - the learning outcomes, the handbook, the lecture material, the assessment, etc. That has not been centralised, nor can it be.

Pretty much every professional service has been centralised however. IT, HR, finance, student support, etc. Our academic operations team was centralised so we don't have a local one any more. Someone in this new centralised team has made a new handbook (based on what, I do not know) rather than asking for the proper ones. Then collated all this dross and sent it in.

This was all done to make "efficiency savings" followed by a round of VR which has also left these new centralised teams chronically understaffed.

Thanks, that's much clearer.

"Efficiency savings" leading to frustration, confusion, drop in service standards and ultimately, more expense.

Whodda thunk it, eh ?

Seriously hope you and your colleagues can untangle this clusterfuvck.

Scottsdad tale is no stranger to me. A sector completely overrun by fuckwits. Had a "planning meeting" with senior "management" earlier this week where they presented 20 slides of "performance data" to us. Every single piece of data was wrong.

I quietly chortled, made my excuses and left.

Useless c***s the lot of them (all on 6 figures mind you)

Not quite a work colleague but someone a client hired as an apprentice roofer recently. The guy had a few choice incidents during his short time as an apprentice. His highlights included while being asked to hold the ladder while the qualified roofer worked on a roof the customer phoned his boss to report that instead of holding the ladder he was lying on the grass on his phone. He also phoned his mum to pick him up over the summer cos it was too hot to work and phoned in the next day saying it was supposed to be hot again so he wouldn't be in! His crowning glory was asking his boss how long his 3 month trial was and what sort of pay rise he would get after that time had passed. Needless to say he didn't get kept on! Our client also worded an advert for a new apprentice to the effect that if you can't keep off your phone don't bother applying.

We have apprentice at our work on the railway (track) and yeah some don’t get it that they’re actually at work!
We had one who in the middle of a job announced he had to go home as his dad had just phoned to tell him it was snowing! Same boy also couldn’t make it in once as his boots were in his car but his brother had borrowed it.

I've worked with a few of them at different places. I think they get used to getting out of tasks at home by pretending to be shit at everything, and somehow think they'll never need to hold down a job if they do the same at work.

One workshy c**t seemed to have a never-ending stream of lassies from his old high school who'd stop by; if he disappeared, you knew he'd be out the front chatting up a wee group of fourteen-year-olds. Not sure exactly where the line is for chasing schoolies, but I think you've crossed it by the time you hit nineteen.

After that event, I'd have duct taped his phone to the ladder!

Christmas wind down begins today pretty much, would everyone agree? Although going by the amount some you post I'm not sure when you actually do any work.

Might even have a mince pie soon, f**k it man.

My wife bought me a box of mince pies on Tuesday and there's only one left...

I've delayed mine, I've been waiting to hear @mathematics review on the Tesco mince pies before I dive into them, might want to plump for something else. I also want to get some cream for them to go for the full mince pie experience.
