Scotland Centre Backs

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see David Marshall be given more freedom to push into the midfield, Jack could drop and McTominay fill in as sweeper keeper.
Feck it. Marshall, Gordon and McLaughlin in a roving GK 3, rampaging into the opposition box at every opportunity. Ryan Fraser dropping back into our nets.

Think it would be a bit harsh on Declan Gallagher to be dropped from the starting 11 given he hasn't put a foot wrong. I like big Hanley though and would be fine with him being in the squad.

Would it be an idea to put Declan on the right hand side of the three? Freeing up Mctominay to play in midfield.

Positive that Gallagher played there for Livingston against Dunfermline in the past.

Hanley's limitations on the ball rule him out of any centre-back spot other than the middle one IMO.

Agree with this. The main reason Clarke went to the formation he did was because of the lack of footballing ability that our existing central defenders possess. This was very obvious in the final matches of the group under him when we were playing a back four - we couldn't keep the ball because the defenders were so fucking awful at playing out. By going to the back three he's been able to bring genuine ball players in Tierney and McTominay into the defence and we are keeping possession much better.
Ideally we eventually find a defender who is a talented footballer and can defend well and then we can look at moving McTominay further forward, but we certainly shouldn't be even remotely considering it for the likes of Hanley who is rubbish with the ball at their feet and generally makes bad decisions in possession.

Hanley wouldn’t be playing for such a possession based side if he was that bad with the ball at his feet. He’s clearly worked hard on it and improvements are obvious. If you watch Norwich’s second goal away at Cardiff last weekend the move started from Hanley dribbling past one man and playing a composed ball into midfield - a regular feature of his play now. Just don’t expect him to score many goals - His heading accuracy when attacking corners has been dreadful.

Wasn't long ago cooper was being scoffed at, now seems stick on in squad

See no reason why Hanley and hendry can't play there way into contention

Always fancied hendry could be tried at right back, fast, decent with ball at feet. Don't think ever been at club level

him playing in that position once against Dunfermline has certainly convinced me its worth trying.

Hendry was excellent for Dundee. Went to one of the OF and they fucking ruined him like so many players before him. Now excellent again in the Belgian top league. Surely worth a go in central defence where, lets be honest, we're not exactly overburdened with quality.

Well, not being a Livingston fan means I didn't watch Gallagher every week, tended to be when they played against Dunfermline.

Why do folk think the Belgian league is so great btw? Rangers beat Standard home and away and will do the same to Antwerp I'm sure. There is very little between the two countries in terms of coefficient and the only reason their league is above ours is an outlier season five years ago. Good on him that he is getting a regular run of games and seems to have settled well there but they're 8th in the league. If he got loaned to Killie or St Johnstone and was putting in decent performances he wouldn't be mentioned in this thread at all. He was a laughing stock at Celtic - that doesn't mean he can't ever make his way back but no one is watching his games in Belgium and the usual suspects are pounding their collective pudding acting like he's Beckenbauer 2.0. It's not like he has gone on loan to Bayern Munich and has the cigars out every week.

Jack Henry  played before for us as a RCB in a 3 and performed excellently.    He's the sort who probably needs well coached but he has attributes and his distribution is decent.

No f**k you he was shite at Celtic and the Belgian league is shite and st mirren are probably better than half of them so you must be talking shite
