Representative match
Scotland 2-3 Scotland B

at Easter Road, Edinburgh     7,000

Scotland has suffered more than its fair share of embarrassing defeats down the decades but this is probably among the most forgotten: losing by the odd goal in 5 to their own B team. It was a trial match to help prepare for upcoming Home Nations and B internationals with England, and was the first major representative match staged under Hibs new floodlights.

It was played in treacherous conditions - by kickoff the frozen surface was covered by 2 or 3 inches of fresh snow, which deepened during a blizzard post HT - and it kept the crowd to a meagre level. Patrick Buckley scored either side of the interval to put Scotland up 2-0, but a brace from Johnny Davidson and Tommy Gemmell's winner meant an unlikely victory for the second string.

Ironically the B international against England B the following month was postponed as Ibrox was hopelessly waterlogged.

@Shandon Parshould get himself down to Parkers Overalls.

Look at the heights of both teams, very few could be described as tall.

Pity same didn’t happen for the A-Team as even with two Mr T’s they lost 2-7. It was they’re first win over us at Wembley since 1934 though.

William Carruthers Cunningham [c] (8/Preston North End)
Henry Haddock (2/Clyde) -

St Mirren goalkeeper Dennis Connaghan pictured in the mid 1960's.  He would later have spells at Morton and Celtic.

Pretty sure this isn't Love Street as the stand at St Mirren's old ground was quite small and didn't run the entire length of the pitch, im thinking it's either Tynecastle or Brockville.

Edit, Firhill could be a shout as well.

Denis Connaghan is still involved with football, via being on the committee of Neilston FC.

Despite his later involvement with Neilston he played with Arthurlie for a while, including the season they got to the final (1980/81) , only to lose to Pollok.  That included an amazing semi final against Bo'ness United Brockville - what a night that was during and after the game.

This is the first time that I have ever seen Paddy Buckley referred to as “Patrick”. @Jacksgranda may be able to correct me though.

The line of the support stanchions are offset - looks more like Easter Road. Did Hibs not pioneer floodlight games around this time hence the spotlights at ridge of stand.

No, it was always "Paddy". He was called Paddy in the programme notes.

I've seen Billy McNeill referred to as "William" and Davie Wilson as "David" in some of the Scottish Cup/League Cup semi finals and finals programmes from that era.

Maybe HibeeJibee was copying a newspaper report?

A few Celtic fans jumping up in the Main Stand at Ibrox, but nobody brave enough in the Orange Enclosure.

When I first attended a game at Ibrox we got half that enclosure but not the seats above it.

We got pumped 5-1 after Frank McAvennie scored in the first minute and spent the whole match having hot drinks, coins and lit cigarettes pelted down at us.

Was a fantastic day....🙄

Copied it off online database without thinking.

Saturday 22nd February 1958
Amateur Home Nations
Scotland Amateurs 1-3 Northern Ireland Amateurs

at Broomfield Park, Airdrie

Deepest darkest Lanarkshire was the venue for this amateur international. (Any locals who stayed home rather than travel to East Fife likely regretted it - as Airdrie scored 6 without reply).

Scotland's team comprised a motley collection of 2 players from the Football League (both QPR)... 4 from the Scottish League (Airdrieonians, Clyde, Queen's Park, Third Lanark)... 3 from the Athenian League (pair at Hounslow and another from Hitchin)... somebody from Jordanhill Training College... and a 'keeper from Wormit Amateur. In contrast the Irishmen's entire XI hailed from the Irish League and this experience told as they look the lead shortly before HT, were pegged-back by McDonald with 10mins left, but scored twice more for an impressive victory.

With an injection of reinforcements from Glasgow Uni, Spartans and Queen's Park the Scots actually managed to beat Wales, then defeat England at Wembley: ultimately the championship ended in a 3-way tie.

Used to go in that bit of the ground in the seventies, wearing a scarf, and although the folk weren't exactly friendly, they also didn't give any bother: I'm not a tall person by any measure, and it wasn't bravado, just liked watching games from the side of the pitch rather than the end.

Mind you, that's before we 'killed' them, and 'kicked them when they were down'.

Was that the Ian Andrews game (27th August 1988)? Bit of an "ooft" when the young TTB saw the scoreline.

An Old Firm game on a Saturday too... Makes you feel auld! Interestingly enough the Hibs v Hearts derby (0-0) was played at the same time Meadowbank were at home to Falkirk (2-1). Polis would probably have palpitations about that now.
