You're clearly referring to that last minute penalty he gave Dunfermline against Airdrie in a league Cup semi final?

Can't remember if it was a last gasp equaliser or winner but seem to recall it was a handball award so ridiculous even Rangers wouldn't have appealed for it.

Equaliser. Then lost on penalties.

No-one appealed it, it was far out the box and wasn't near his hand!

@Shandon Par, it wouldn't be complete without your input. Were you still at Napier at the time?

Surprised to see Bobby Charlton in the cover and listed in the starting line up, but I see a section within the programme acknowledges his terrible injuries in the Munich Disaster a few days before this match.

Brother Syme, man of the match performance for Rangers in the 1996 SKOL league Cup final.

Apparently his old man was a referee and equally fond of a funny handshake, Jock Stein said to him once after a typical Masonic goat shagging masterclass against Celtic..  "Aye, your dad would be proud of you the day son"

I'm sure he had retired by then, you probably mean 1986. He was just a shit referee. Prior to the 1991 Final he'd gone into the dressing rooms and informed the players he'd be avoiding bringing his book out, which gave some of the players (I'm thinking of Luc Nijholt) freedom to kick everything that moved. He eventually only booked Nijholt in the second period of extra time, the only card in 120 minutes. Then he red carded 4 United players at Full Time.

I was still at high school. Hadn’t yet mastered counting to four or whatever the entrance qualifications were for Napier.

The funniest thing was seeing Andy Rhodes, father to a wee Pars fan, trying to look upset at not saving the last penalty. John “also a Par” Watson made a mess of his penalty too. Think I paused and rewatched the hilarious penalty award more than some of the stuff taped off Eurotrash.

I have always had a sneaky suspicion Airdrie would have beaten Hibs in the Final. Here's the Hibs team in the Final:

Burridge, Miller, Mitchell, Hunter, McIntyre, McLeod, Weir, Hamilton, Wright, Evans, McGinlay. Subs: Beaumont, Orr.

Airdrie's semi-final team: Martin, Honor, Kidd, Balfour, Black, Lawrence, Stewart, Sandison, Conn, Watson, Coyle Subs: Jack, Kirkwood.

so Brother Syme did Hibs a favour

Later that same season Airdrie beat Hibs in the Scottish Cup at Easter Road. (Random matches I went to 30 years ago...)

Wednesday 12th February 1964
Olympic Games qualifying, First Round, First Leg
Great Britain 2-1 Greece

at Stamford Bridge, London     4,175

Peter Buchanan of Queen's Park scored what proved the winner in the opening leg of the penultimate round of qualifying for Tokyo 1964. His team-mate Bill Neil also starred in defence. After taking the lead through Lawrence of Enfield on 38mins it was Buchanan who doubled Team GB's advantage 5mins later, and although Greece hit back just 2mins after HT, the hosts held-out to carry an important advantage into the return.

Team GB lost that leg - played at the Olympiakos ground on April 8th - by a heavy score of 4-1, for an aggregate 5-3 defeat. Buchanan tied it up at 1-1, but 3 late goals carried Greece to victory. However it was then found the Greeks had fielded professionals. Whether from a corinthian spirit, financial considerations or the liklihood of getting thumped... Great Britain declined to take-up their tie, meaning Czechslovakia qualified by default - and ultimately won silver.

BBC and STV schedules for the 1980 Scottish Cup Final, back when coverage lasted the best part of the day.

Cup Final Cavalcade. 😀

STV having the sense to schedule programmes that could be easily jettisoned in the event of extra time and/or a full blown barmy on the pitch.

Willie Ormond opened his career as national team manager with a narrow loss in Ayrshire on a park described as resembling "an alpine glacier". Jimmy Bone gave the hosts a lead on 25mins but strikes on 46mins and 51mins from Whymark and Barrowclough gave the visitors an ultimately winning lead.

A rather battered copy of Third Lanark v East Stirling(shire) from 1963/64, only 'Shire's second ever season in the top flight, which like their first ended in relegation. They collected only 12 points, 2 of which they got at Cathkin that day. (Thirds won the return game.) Two more of their points came against the Dons at Firs Park. Those 12 points were 5 more than Thirds collected in their disastrous relegation season the following season.

Despite all their trials and tribulations since - and they've had plenty - Shire have survived, albeit now plying their trade in the Lowland League, whereas Thirds disappeared 3 years later.

I like the insinuation at the bottom of the page that there might be loads of bootleg Third Lanark pools.
