"before" what? Having their dinner? Going to the pub? Going to bed early?

On 2 May 1981 5,762 people squeezed into Firs Park to see Dundee defeat East Stirlingshire 1-0 to secure promotion back to the Premier Division by having a goal difference of 4 more than St Johnstone. Hibs were top 5 points ahead. East Stirling finished 11th out of 14. I moved to Australia earlier that season, my last game was a 4-0 home win over Falkirk in September, the second last was a 2-2 draw after being 0-2 down v Berwick Rangers who had Dave Smith ex Aberdeen and a few other clubs playing for them. Also saw George Best playing for Hibs at Dens for the second time that month. In the days before internet I didn’t know the result of the East Stirling game until reading Monday morning’s paper.

From the Dee Archive.

Scotland 2 Uruguay 3 at Hampden on 2 May 1962 att: 67,081. Uruguay were 3-0 up (Sasia 37, Cubilla 44, 47) before Jim Baxter 74 and Ralph Brand 88 scored. Recognise Jim Baxter and Eric Caldow is behind him.

A crowd shot from a completely different game pops up.

I was surprised by 'low' attendance.

There was always a Hampden friendly v foreign opposition right after season ended but many had noticeably poor crowds for the time... fans more parochial?

The 1962 European Cup Final between Benfica and Real Madrid was also on 2 May. I’m sure this was televised live so could have been a factor for lower crowd at the Uruguay game. In the first year of the Home Nations move in 1969 only 7,483 turned up for the game v Northern Ireland.

The late Alan Gordon scoring one of a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Dumbarton in the old First Division in April 1974.:His second hat-trick of the season,as he scored all of Hibs goals in a 3-3 draw with Dundee in March. Dundee winning the replay at Dens 3-0 in front of 30,888. Have a feeling there hasn’t been a higher crowd at Dens since then, Alan Gordon played for Hearts, Hibs, Dundee and Dundee United. Picture from cover of the Hibs v Arbroath prgramme from Arbroath Archive.

The 3-3 game was my first away game, sure there was nearly 30,000 at that game, plus all the sneaky ins, like me.

The 3-0 replay was brilliant, absolutely packed, I normally went behind the goals but that night was against the pitch wall at the top of the Derry steps, don't think I've felt a better atmosphere at Dens.

Good view of the old Love Street floodlights which were so low due to being so near to the airport. One for the "quirks of Scottish stadiums" thread.
