Billy McNeil and Jim McLean being interviewed before the 1988 Scottish Cup final on this date, Celtic beating Dundee United 2-1 thanks to a late double from Frank McAvennie after Kevin Gallagher put Utd in front, spookily similar to the final between the two sides three years earlier when Dundee United also took the lead early in the second half only for Celtic to score twice in the last quarter of an hour.

Another photo from that final. Some Celtic players meet a minor politician...

She was introduced to the players outside the dressing rooms pre match as the SFA knew she would be booed vociferously by the crowd had this been done pitch side just before kick off as was normal for invited guests at cup finals.

Mick McCarthy, son of a striking miner from the 84 strike (like myself) refused to shake her hand, much respect to the big man.

Still can't get my head round why both the SFA and the Tories, not to mention Thatcher herself thought her attendance here would be great PR.

40yrs ago Berwick won 2 competitions in 1 game: East of Scotland Shield Final doubling up as the previous season's held over EOS Cup Final. (Possibly last time this happened in Scotland).

Also last time Shield won outwith Hearts + Hibs.

Scottish clubs were banned from playing preseason friendlies until 1965 and not at home until 1966... in England the ban had lifted in 1961.

I think Hearts 4-2 Maccabi Tel Aviv on Monday 1st August 1966 was Scotland's first regular preseason friendly.

SFA/SFL competitive season ran from 2nd Saturday in August to end of April. You'll find most clubs would play a couple of internal public practice matches in early August like 'Probables v Possibles' or 'Whites v Blacks' (although I think they had to let people in free or donate the gate?).

However you could get around it by playing in a competitive tournament or a charity competition. SFA would almost grant bespoke permission for tours and in special years like Festival of Britain.

e.g. randomly picked 1955 and here's early August:

Tuesday 2nd August 1955
Dundee trial (at Claypots)
Raith     Reds 6-2 Blues

Friday 5th August 1955
image.png.0a1d2f6e44a1662d030d2097c27b4ed7.png
Aberdeen trial
Dundee trial (at Dens Park)
Montrose trial

Saturday 6th August 1955
(Allison Trophy at Easter Road)     Edinburgh Select 1-1 Newcastle United
(Rangers Sports & 5-asides at Ibrox)
Airdrie     Diamonds 1-2 Maroons
Arbroath trial
Dunfermline     Blues 4-0 Whites
East Fife     Whites 2-0 Black & Gold
Falkirk     Blues 3-2 Whites
Kilmarnock     Blues 2-1 Stripes
Queen of the South     Blues 3-2 Whites
Raith     Blues 2-2 Reds
St Johnstone trial
St Mirren    Black & White 1-0 Reds
Stenhousemuir     Maroons 1-1 Stripes
Stirling     A Team 4-2 B Team

Monday 6th August 1955
East Stirlingshire trial
Morton trial
Partick trial
Rangers trial
Third Lanark trial

Tuesday 7th August 1955
Queen's Park trial

Phenomenon lingered much longer in the juniors - IIRC it was only around a decade ago they were allowed to play friendlies before the 3rd Saturday in July, when it was moved to 1st Saturday, then almost immediately to start of July.

EDIT: certainly in 2015 the North Region juniors voted to move the cutoff forward 2 weeks to 1st Saturday in July - but East and West regions voted against

Talk about holding on to traditions well passed their sell by date.

The line in the West Juniors as seen in the old Junior forum on here was no games before Glasgow Fair Saturday as though it was set in stone until time ended.

Considering the Glasgow Fair as a factory holiday was dead by the 1970s it was bizarre to see still getting a mention on the P&B forum a decade or less ago. Junior Cup replays were another held on to gig well beyond it's time.

My younger self looking for a football fix dreaded most of May/June/July in the same way i hated a Scottish Sunday. You could probably eek out May with Cup Finals, Senior and Junior and the odd international. Okay for those that lived in Glasgow.

I'd be be interested to know when the Juniors dropped midweek (afternoon) Junior Cup replays.

The idea of 8000 turning up to see Shettleston on a midweek afternoon in 1959 seems bizarre. Even if i vaguely remember parts of Glasgow having midweek half day closing of local shops.

A story from New Zealand about Bert Ormond the younger brother of Willie Ormond and older brother of Gibby Ormond. Bert played for Falkirk, Airdrie and Dumbarton before emigrating to New Zealand in 1961. Later that year he played for New Zealand against an English FA Xi then in 1962 gained full caps in 2 games against New Caledonia, scoring in one. He is the player with the ball in a picture of the NZ side that went on a 15 game world tour in 1964, losing all but one.

@GordonD before my time- any memories of this?

Some familiar names there. Colin Tomassi's brother Peter was a decent East of Scotland goalie but he was also an amateur thespian. I saw him in a play at the Fringe but I can't remember which one!

Hibernian Women legend (and jolly good person) Joelle Murray has announced her retirement after 20 years with the team.

Here she is in action against Inverness.

Chapeau! So accurate.

I still remember having to suffer through any commentary the former Celtic keeper Paddy Berger did on St Johnstone for a while a few years back where he called our goalkeeper Allan ‘McMannus’ the entire match.
