Cyprus had become independent less than 9yrs before and this was their first visit to the British Isles.

It remains our joint 3rd biggest win bettered only by 11-0 v Ireland in 1911 and 9-0 v Wales in 1878.

Photograph of the youthful looking pairing of Billy Bremner (31) and Jimmy Johnstone (29) after the English were eviscerated on the pristine Hampden turf.

Would have loved to have been at this game, but sadly could not attend, mainly due to the fact that I wasn’t yet alive. I’m pretty confident my Dad would have been there with a carry out. Think he stood in the enclosure for this one.

Youthful, I think your Internet has broken.

I attended that match, it wasChelsea's  Eddie McCreadie's last cap. I reckon.

10 years before, here he is in the 'Shire team which defeated Falkirk 3-2 at Brockville.

Back row, left to right, Boyd, McKenzie, Thomson, Webster, Bolton and Canning.
Front row, Archdeacon, Forsyth, McCreadie, Duffy and Boyd.

Eddie McCreadie scored the second 'Shire goal in the game, and Falkirk's second had been netted by another great Scotttish player who moved on to London, The Ghost of White Hart Lane, John White.

19 May 1957 after a 4-2 WCQ victory over Spain at Hampden 11 days earlier Scotland defeated Switzerland 2-1 in Basel in front of 48,000. Switzerland took the lead after 13 mins. Blackpool’s Jackie Mudie after 33 mins and Clyde’s Tommy Ring in the 72nd min won the game. 7 days later Scotland lost 1-4 in Madrid but in November beat Switzerland 3-2 at Hampden to qualify for the 1958 WC in Sweden. In between the away games in Basel and Madrid Scotland defeated West Germany 3-1 in a Friendly in Stuttgart.

I’m guessing Scotland wore red shorts in this game.

60yrs ago tomorrow!

No fewer than 3 different Scots appeared for Europe - with Denis Law scoring - in a 4-2 win over Scandinavia at what is now the Parken in Copenhagen, to celebrate the DBU's 75th anniversary.

(Alex Hamilton of Dundee has to miss their 5-1 win over St Johnstone in the Summer Cup to play; while Willie Henderson of Rangers had also been called-up for Europe but did not feature).

(Carl Bertelsen and Jens Petersen the Danes featuring for Scandinavia signed for Morton and Aberdeen in the closed season; plus Roald Jensen the Norwegian joined Hearts the next year).

That was the first international match my dad took me to - it was for my 8th birthday, which was close to that date.

Coincidentally the last international match we went to together was Scotland v Cyprus March 2023 (54 years later) in the 1st qualifying game for this year's Euros in Germany.  Sadly, he is no longer fit to go to Hampden and stand for the full game.

I can still remember the booing when Gemmell took the penalty from the West Terracing.

West Terracing, polite way of saying the Rangers End.

No, the correct reference to that end of the ground. Only fuckwits refer to the sides of a national stadium by one of the many clubs whose fans happen to have used it when previously playing there

Okay, now come down off the top of the new Forth Road Bridge to Glesga street level.

Many use the bigot ends as an ironic nod to the mythical neutrality of the national stadium.

I heard a Celtic fan refer to the Celtic end at Parkhead recently.
