being a lollipop lady is always seen as a nice job, helping kiddies across the road, chatting to young mums, getting little gifts off the children on your birthday and at the end of term and being able to reduce the most impatient of drivers to paragons of tolerant virtue simply by holding up your sign and maybe raising a gently admonishing palm if they seem a little too eager to drive past

being known as a lollipop man, though, means folk spray-paint PAEDO on your house, and push dog shit through your letterbox - how is that fair in these enlightened times of so-called equality ?

Anybody remember the ice lollies that had a kind of jelly in the middle?

yup - kinda spirally things - twisters - i think there's a modern version which just has different ice cream in the middle, rather than jelly...

and - way back - dracula lollies that were black with red "jelly blood" inside...

Best ones used to be the homemade ones that the little local shops used to sell. They were a bit like these and they would be filled with diluted juice and a little stick put in them and then frozen. You could then collect the used sticks and link them together to make a little boomerang type toy.

Too things that shocked me when coming here at first, but is very natural now.

Ice cream in a wee tub, made from coconuts, get to the bottom and a dollop of sticky rice is a slight surprise.

Secondly, ice cream in a soft roll. Try it...
