Miguel Sanchez
Week 50 update One death this week, some old burd off a soap: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/dec/13/tributes-paid-to-emmerdale-actress-sheila-mercier-after-her-death-at-100 Quote Sheila Mercier, who played Emmerdale’s matriarch, Annie Sugden, for more than 20 years, has died aged 100. ITV confirmed the veteran performer’s death in a statement on Friday night. A spokeswoman for the programme said: “It’s always sad to hear of the death of an actor who played a significant part in Emmerdale’s success. “Even more so when that actor was in the very first episode and around whose family the show was built. “Annie Sugden embodied all the virtues of Yorkshire ... she was hard-working, resilient, determined, down to earth and didn’t suffer fools gladly. “Sheila had many of those qualities too, putting the needs of the programme above her own and always delivering a great performance come rain or shine. She will be greatly missed.” I'm not a soap fan, but I'll echo something I've said in some of the recent deaths. This is someone who was a prominent public figure for the best part of three decades. There's a lot to be said of the quality and worth of soap operas but for better or worse, they're there, and millions of people take in everything they have to say. The description of Mercier's character above says as much. She was picked by two people, @JustOneCornetto and @Once A Rover always a Rover. She was 100 so she's worth 25 Base Points. The Deadly December bonus means she gets an extra 25 and the Deadly Duo bonus sees an extra 25, for a final total of 75 each. She's also currently eligible for the Last Gasp bonus, but I'm going to add that in the final update. As a result, the standings now look like this: 1. alta-pete 760 2. peasy23
Ted McKenna, the SAHB drummer, died in January this year. Alex would have been 85 next year!My uncle is a saxophone player and played with the Alex Harvey Soul Band, and did gigs with Alex well into the 1970s. Got some pictures at home of him on stage at the Apollo with Alex and co.
