For those who expressed an interest earlier in the thread, myself and others had some lockdown-compliant success probing some holes in Perthshire and Applecross earlier in 2020. Digging out what looked like an insignificant grassy hole turned out to be a 50m+ cave through stripy stuff with bits large enough to walk through, but with the occasional squeeze bit between chambers. The Applecross find on the other hand involves a couple of hundred metres of decorated passage.

If you’ve not already, check out Grayson Perry’s Art Club (Return). Should be on channel 4 catch up etc just. There’s a lad on it whose stuff ends up in Grayson’s exhibition in Manchester and it’s all wee figures he creates and paints. They’re more Chorlton and the Wheelies than your efforts but they look amazing. He has a learning difficult and isn’t too comfortable speaking etc but expresses himself through creating and painting the figures -

Certain caves certainly get less traffic after Christmas.

Tbf, there have been things I thought I'd never get through just by looking at them, but end up managing without too much bother.  It's certainly a good feeling when you dig out a hole and eventually pop out into a chamber knowing that no human has ever been there before (unless they were around before the last glaciers filled the entrance with all the s*** of the day).

That said, in the case of re-discovered caves, every now and again there'll be some sort of archaeological material.  Finds to date around Scotland include Bronze Age human skeletons, polar bear skeletons, Iron Age chain necklaces, polished axes, ancient hyena bones, old carvings etc etc, so it's hardly a pointless 'selfish' exercise.  The folks at the National Museum of Scotland like us anyway.

I found a well-preserved empty fag packet dating back to the 60s once, which I wasn't too chuffed about as I thought I had clambered up a ladder into a new chamber... until I saw this lying in the middle.   

 

Once found some old WW2 shells too.  

... and a badger who took an instant dislike to me.  The feeling was mutual.

Are wellies really the best footwear for caving, surely they'll just fill up with water and they're not that good for clambering over slippery rocks.

 

I'd get stuck if I tried that and Elon musk would have to invent a Thunderbirds style rescue machine.

Definitely, certainly when you get ones with good tread.  You can easily tilt your leg up to empty them if need be, and if they're good fitting then they hold a small amount of water in and make your feet warm after not too long (especially with wetsocks on).  Anything with laces quickly becomes a pain when the laces constantly come undone and snag on things. 

As for slippery rocks, they don't exist in caves, other than at the entrance.  It's the film of algae that makes the rocks slippery, and without light it can't grow on the rocks.    It's really weird walking down a steeply inclined river bed as you're expecting to slip on your arse, but you don't.  However, a lesson I quickly learned:  don't sit on a snow covered valley side when wearing a one-piece PVC oversuit.
