mathematics
Primary kids won’t be doing algebra like that yet, so your son is excused for not understanding it. you, on the other hand..:
mathematics
Just realised the OP’s son is 10. That’s still primary isn’t it?

Shotgun
Just the other day, I read about an experiment where folk who were good at algebra, were than asked to solve some simple equations but rather than using the traditional x, y & z or a, b & c, they were given different letters such as f, l, g and so on. They all reported finding it much, much harder. Conclusion: Algebra is a shite way to learn.

Bairnardo
Good time to begin a discussion on the utter futility of existence IMO. What's the fucking point? Let x be total number of roses let w be total number of white roses let r be total number of red roses (1) 0.8x = w and (2) 0.2x = r (3) w +76 = 0.75(x+76+48) (4) r+48 = 0.25(x+76+48) chuck equation 1 into 3, or 2 into 4, then solve for x Like I said...
coprolite
You need to find the lowest common denominator, so you're in the right place

Then write out the solutions that you already know.

I add 76 white and 48 red. Now 75% are white. What is the value of X? I have worked out the answer using a spreadsheet but he needs to show workings. Any ideas? If you worked out what to tell a spreadsheet to do, surely you could do the same for a ten year old boy?
