Although physically tiny at 4ft 10in tall, Barbara Windsor, who has died aged 83, was a giant of the British entertainment industry, conquering films, theatre and television in a career that spanned 60 years, 50 of them as a top star. She identified her appeal with characteristic bluntness: “You could always find a barmaid who looked like me.”

Right I need to say something here. She was in a couple of films whose entire appeal was based on sexual innuendo. She was in a soap for a bit. If this is the bar for national treasure in this country then it's no wonder Brexit is a thing. I'm sure she was lovely - and since her dementia diagnosis she had a great effect on awareness of the condition - but I don't get the response on this occasion.

It seems odd that a  no more than fairly attractive woman like Windsor was operated a sex symbol in the Carry Ons, until you remember her leading man was Sid James and was usually beating woman off with a stick.

Like discussion on other threads about films, I suppose it's about the suspension of belief.
