With the exception of a few short periods in history, European countries in general have tended to be much more socialist and caring towards their citizens than Britain.

I suppose a lot is down to our class system which has never really ended where the working class have always been despised and seen as nothing more than cannon fodder to be exploited so as to keep our aristocracy and wealthy in the manner to which they are accustomed.

Also we are not citizens.  We are British subjects.   The government is not our government - it is Her Majesty's government.  The navy, the air force, the mail service.  Nothing to do with us.  Royal this, royal that and so on.

Give you some idea where we all fit in.

Stupid as it is, that doesn't make us particularly unusual in Europe.

The biggest problem with the British working class is that they’ve bought into the bullshit that they’re not working class.

There’s too many of them think that because they have their own home (usually heavily mortgaged) and a few quid in the bank/ISA/pension fund then they have more in common with the likes of Johnson, Sunak and Mogg than they do with people living in rented accommodation and working in lower paid jobs.

Also the spoon fed bullshit that the NHS is the best healthcare system in the world.

Fair enough. I wasn't sure that was the case from your post. Thanks for clarifying your point. Edit to add i took it from your use of "doctors" that this had happened more than once. I'd have thought one doctor telling them to "f**k off" and highlighting the illegality of such an act would be enough. Maybe you meany just one incident. If not must be really desperate as you suggest I guess.

They’ve been reported so hopefully action will be taken. I think theres a feeling in the care home industry that the government will be paying for beds for a while to increase hospital bed capacity, so they seem desperate to look like there is no infection issue within.

If this strain had a 100% death rate would the world have been organised enough to build an underground shelter and select some people to be put in there? How would they decide who to send and how many would need to to ensure a wide enough gene pool?

Surely that's a question for the Windsor family?

I just encountered a group of 5 baseball hat wearing junkie neds stoating down renfield street shoulder to shoulder with one another, taking up the entire pavement and in fact literally banging into people who were trying to pass them. Even more bizarrely they were passing a bottle between one another. Total rockets of the highest order and of course not a member of the constabulary in sight.

I can only imagine what people would say if the UK government (or Scottish government) said that they were going to reform the NHS based on the German model of healthcare.

If they were reforming salaries, taxation and the social security systems to match, then I think most would be rather pleased.

fun replies to this. You'll notice he can't help but mouth along to the script at one point.

Didn't realise Ben Fogle was a Raith Rovers fan.

Anyway, I see that Boris Johnson has had a massive jump in popularity, up 17 points.

f**k the UK.

First time in town today for a few weeks (working alone in the office) and saw a similar group on Argyle St earlier. Still the odd loonball about but they were the only group I noticed.

It does not keep me awake either.

However look at America.  For all the criticism they get they do make a thing about the government being their government.  The White House is open to the general public, as is the Congress building, the Pentagon and the FBI.  Yes there are restrictions but at the same time it indicates who they serve.

By contrast the British state was historically for the benefit of the monarchy first and foremost and the general public had no claim to anything.  Maybe less so now but not a great starting point.

I'm a buckled lefty myself but general competence seems to be the big factor here, which isn't a purely left or right thing. It would be hard to argue that the CDU are the worst party at running a country in Europe, albeit they always have coalition partners as well.

The handling of Coronavirus hasn't offered up many surprises to me. The countries you'd expect to cope well largely have and basket cases like Italy, America and Britain have had shockers.

Test results back and it's a negative.

Quite pleased though was almost hoping this was my dose of it as despite feeling ropey I wasn't that bad and no respiratory symptoms.

Maybe I've already had it, maybe I'm still to get it.

God knows, anyone got an antibody test...

^^^^ working in the NHS yet can’t pass a test; I’m not clapping for him.

On a serious note, good stuff.
