ok there's a memorial cairn by the road there, so must be a battle that took place on a road through a valley or something - how about the A87 through Glenshiel ?

It's a smaller road than that - a road like the A87 would have continuous white lines along the edges.

I'm starting to worry you'd need to have driven this road to know it. Should I offer a clue?

A clue might be useful.  It could be the road to Leadhills.  It could be the road to Coldstream.  Maybe it is not in Scotland.

The B797 that goes from Abingdon south towards the road between Kilmarnock and Dumfries.
