It's not about 3rd, he'd lost control and could no longer get a response. Motherwell, Aberdeen, Killie were all horrible performances and he kept promising a reaction and couldn't. People looking in from the outside think it's harsh but we were on a downward spiral and it was inevitable once the fans turn like that. Personally I’d have been inclined to give more time but I can’t argue that it was a terrible injustice and last time he left it was because he dumped us in favour of Milton Keynes so I’m struggling to feel much sympathy for him

Which is why I think this sacking is based on the money, not the product on the pitch. We all know that Budge has a "wide-on" for Neilson, but the dolla-dolla means more. At this point you are effectively playing for 3rd 4th or 5th, all of which look to guarantee Europe, changing the manager isn't really going to change that outcome, imo.

So at that point you're kicking the can down the road. He's also been backed massively financially and we are worse than last season. Yes he's been unlucky with injuries but we still backed him in January.

There's a massive difference between 3rd and 5th though. About £6m. And Robbie has been backed heavily to deliver that spot, if he doesn't get it he's not hard done by. We've been absolutely brutal for months. I fail to see how he's been handled harshly tbh.

I'm not suggesting you haven't. I totally understand why you'd be happy to see the back of him. What I'm saying is replacing the manager now is as likely to solve that problem as keeping Neilson on. I'd get it if there was more wiggle room, either with the transfer window or there were more games left, but it's a decreasing set of returns. btw, are you sure about the £6m difference in payment, are you not getting confused with the prize money being £6m for the winner? The difference between 3rd and 5th is about £1m iirc.
gannonball
Usually I side with the manager with these sort of sackings but the guy comes across as an absolute wet wipe in interviews. Not the sort of guy you want when your under pressure and looking to inspire a dressing room.

It's a big wedge for a club like us and you don't want to hand it directly to a rival. Finish 5th and you have about 3 qualifying rounds that we'll inevitably get papped out of.

An interim manager maybe help rebuild that a bit.

Yes, he has lost important players but he was given money to replace them but he has brought in players that are not good enough. We should have replaced Souttar but we keep signing shit centre halves.

That's a bit of a stretch to what you originally wrote, I also still don't believe it's a £6m difference but who knows it might be. I'd guess a lot of that would depend on which teams and where they are based. 1 minute ago, Tony Wonder said: Also, by a lot of accounts he's lost the backing of some players. You know the point I'm making, I'm not saying I'm right, just saying it's a gamble that is as likely to pay off as not.
Otis Blue
It had to be done. The squad had no faith in Neilson and the guaranteed Conf League cash going with 3rd was too important for the Jambos. Now, some will say "why now" as the window is closed and the new guy can't alter the squad ... well, just look to south London and see what Roy Hodgson has done with the same group of players at Palace - 2 wins on the spin and pumped Leeds at Elland Rd today. It can be done. Edited April 9, 2023 by Otis Blue

That's what Robbie chucking it could cost us. And with gate money it's about £6m, that's what we brought in this season.

You get about £3m European money simply by finishing 3rd, then you add in getting 4 home games which, for them, would be 4 sell outs. Add in ~£400k for any win and ~£200k for any draw.

My point still stands though, it's a gamble that has very little return to it, as there is no absolutely no way you can guarantee a new manager will do better.
