Detournement
How many weeks of the year can gamers support a 4000 capacity venue in Dundee? If it's multi purpose for gigs, exhibitions etc then fair enough but if it's just gaming it's surely not sustainable.

Don't see why you couldn't use it for other events but I think you underestimate just how much esports gaming can bring in, it's a billion dollar industry worldwide. If its run well it should be pissing money.

Detournement
34 minutes ago, The Moonster said: Is this a serious take? Aye. There's no market in Dundee for bands that play mid size gigs and the football clubs don't get much more than 4000 each either. It's got a population comparable to Chelmsford or Canterbury.

You're a numpty if you think these are even comparable. How many people travel from all over the world to attend Dens Park? How many people from all over the world tune into a live stream to watch Dundee United? It's expected that esports viewing figures will dwarf every other sport apart from the NFL by the end of 2021. Only Yer Da would think having a venue in Scotland that can hold these events is a bad thing.

Dundee United average attendance 2019-20: 8,496 Dundee population: 148,270 Canterbury population: 55,240 Not that any of that has any relevance to the viability of an arena that people can travel to from anywhere in Scotland or the world. however.

This will definitely happen imo. It's not opening tomorrow. Anyway, maybe Dundee Utd can look into groundsharing with the gaming nerds?
invergowrie arab
Pipe dream but would be ideal of this venue could include an ice plant for hockey. As others have said it will likely plug the conference centre, gig venue gap Dundee has rather than being exclusive e-sports. It will be built before Dundees new stadium at Camperdown in any case.

Ludo*1
David Beckham selling some shares in his e-sports company for £20m. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54085209 To put it into context, the major Fortnite competition in 2019 offered more than a million pound more in prize money than the US Masters did. Dundee is one of the best places in the world to learn about game design so it's no surprise that there will be a demand for this sort of venue in the future.
