welshbairn
I tried to read Gadhafi's Mao rip off, The Green Book. He would definitely have failed Modern Studies O-grade, might have got a job writing for Hallmark cards though.

Detournement
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/apr/29/diplomat-gaddafi-troops-viagra-mass-rape This is probably the most blatant bit of black propaganda in modern history. How to get British people enthused for a war in Libya? Make them think of engorged black penises.

I know everyone should have known better well before that but some of the shit that the warmongers put out around the time of the Libyan "humanitarian intervention" (such as the above) was proper jumping the shark material.

welshbairn
It's probably overstating it and nothing will change much, but I'm getting a real sense of a gerontocracy in decline, like the Brezhnev/Andropov era and the end of Mao's mates on the Long March ruling China.

Had a quick google and: Brezhnev: died at 75 Andropov: died at 69 Chernenko: died at 73 They would have at least a decade left at the top in the current setup!
NotThePars
Why are Americans staying in these jobs far longer than they should? You have this farcical situation where people in their late 60s and early 70s aren't even remarked upon as unusual because of Ginsburgs, Pelosis, Feinsteins. And is it more of a democrat thing than a republican thing? I don’t know if there’s more focus on the Democrats because there is a young progressive wing clearly on some level in fundamental opposition to the geriatrics running the party on top of recent leaks and footage of the actual senility of the senior Democrats. Just Googled two “young” Republican rising stars and Dan Crenshaw is 36 and Tom Cotton (how does someone with those politics have that name outside of an unsubtle satire?) is 43. “The Squad” range from 31-46.
D Angelo Barksdale
Imo a big part of it is some people with certain political views, usually using descriptors such as sensible or moderate, genuinely believe that they should run things because they either think that they are smarter than everyone else or because they are the 'sensible' or 'moderate' ones. They're not going to relinquish power easily, or at all, especially if their proposed replacements aren't in their opinion, 'sensible' or 'moderate'. This is prevalent not just in the Democrats, but in the Labour Party and eventually probably the SNP. The tories and the GOP are a different breed. If Feinstein was a republican she would have been emptied a while back. You could point to McConnell of course, but he's obviously still an effective political operator.

Two recent Republican presidents (Trump and Reagan) were pretty openly senile while in office. I don’t know if the Republicans are just better at working around it.Sanders is obviously ancient as well but is much, much sharper than most of the geriatrics around him. Being permanently furious about the state of the world probably tethers him to reality in the way that spite and narcissism slightly kept Trump in the here and now.
NotThePars
This is so funny. Biden just shouting at an activist for not believing in him enough. Was immediately gone at the Trumpian “no one’s did as much as me at this point”.

A sort of Judge Judy effect in action. Enough money to retire comfortably many times over long ago, but enjoys having the soapbox to moralise and lord it over the untermenschen too much to ever want to let it go. edit: it might tie in with the weird obsession with getting all types of plastic surgery in later life too somehow... Wonder if there's a stigma in America for retirees and stereotypes of people fucking off to Florida once they're out of working life and becoming absorbed Akira style into that state's utter insanity. To be fair to her she almost made it through to Biden, I thought she would have died years ago. She was arrogant enough to think nobody else could do what she could, and I suppose she spent her life doing stuff she was told she couldn't. Should have retired during Obama's first 2 years when he had a Senate majority and she was already 75.
NotThePars
Risking the sacrifice of millions of people’s reproductive and labour rights so two old rich women can have girl boss moments and then getting mad when people don’t feel like voting for the party that enabled that insanity

The actual old codger doesn't have to do anything, they are just an electoral avatar and their family and flunkies weild the power and soak up the cash. Elections are extremely lucrative for everyone involved.
