BUT: Imagine for a moment or two the horror of watching Serbia v England/Czechs/Croatia with two of those games being played in our own ground. It's actually 3 group games at Hampden but agreed, if we were to pick one tournament to qualify for so far in the 21st century, it would have to be this one.

As mentioned above the Sweden game at Ibrox was probably the best performance ever by a Scotland goalie. We had the tightest defence in Europe in the mid 90s, and Jim was an integral part in achieving that. We did that's true, excellent defensive side playing 352 funnily enough and passing the ball well. Leighton was class and a big part of that as you say. Had a very long career at the top.

Carnoustie Young Guvnor
We've been pretty lucky with keepers really the last forty years or so. From Leighton to Goram to Sullivan, Gordon, McGregor, Marshall we've always had a good keeper. Only Marshall left now and I don't see an obvious standout successor just now.

Nah that is right, we had some ridiculous defensive record for a while that was the best defence in Europe. I can't remember exactly what it was but some defensive stat.

Gordopolis
Italy probably have something to say about that. I think there was a spell where we were officially ranked as the meanest defence in Europe, ahead of Italy and everyone else. - might have been the 98 qualifying campaign
HibeeJibee
England, Italy and Norway all conceded fewer goals than us in WC 1998 qualifying albeit all played 8 games instead of 10. France conceded fewer goals than us in Euro 96 qualifying. Still creditable. It would be unreasonable to let that pass without nothing we also scored fewest goals of any qualifier in WC 1998 qualifying and fewer than any bar Romania for Euro 96 (plus Switzerland and Turkey who were in a smaller group and didn't have a minnow to thrash)! In neither case did we actually win our group, and in the former instance only qualified automatically as best-runner-up, interestingly. So it was built on dual foundations... WC 1998 qualifying deserves a special mention as we only conceded in 2 games out of 10, and latter was while already 3-0 up on Belarus.
