"Rishi Sunak considering weakening key green policies"

From article - "First, the government would push the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars - currently set to come into force in 2030 - back to 2035. The 2030 date has been government policy since 2020.

Second, the government would significantly weaken the plan to phase out the installation of gas boilers by 2035, saying that they only want 80% to be phased out by that year.

Third, homeowners and landlords would be told that there will be no new energy efficiency regulations on homes. Ministers had been considering imposing fines on landlords who fail to upgrade their properties to a certain level of energy efficiency.

Fourth, the 2026 ban on off-grid oil boilers will be delayed to 2035, with only an 80% phase out target at that date.

In addition, Britons will be told that there will be no new taxes to discourage flying; no government policies to change people's diets; and no measures to encourage carpooling.

Mr Sunak is also likely to rule out what he sees as burdensome recycling schemes."

It's clearly going so well.

Pushing back the dates for phasing out petrol/diesel car sales and gas boiler installations I'm not too bothered with. Whilst I'd like to see it done sooner rather than later, I don't think the impact of these bans have been fully thought through.

But, it's scandalous that landlords may not be forced to upgrade the energy efficiency of their rental homes. No one should have to live in a home with crap insulation and heating and be forced to pay over the odds for heating just because the landlord can't be arsed to make improvements as he sees no benefit to him.

The tories hugely watering down the net zero policies is plain stupid on so many levels, but the main 2 are; 1. It's just completely out of step with what the people who are going to be most impacted by climate change want and 2. Its just bad economics. The UK has a head start on most economies on renewables and green economies in general. To slow down domestically curtail the growth in areas the whole world will be growing into, is just plan nuts.

For them, they have taken a wrongly perceived victory in London on ULEZ and are walking back on net zero which frankly is political suicide, but clearly an act of desperation.

This is a generalisation, but broadly speaking the people concerned about these issue don’t vote Tory and the people who vote Tory have different priorities.

I give it about 9 days before Starmer says they’re not watering it down enough, tbh.

LABOUR CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION ON ONOROUS ENVIRONMENTAL TARGETS

"We're ready to support emergency scrapping of these unnecessary green policies, but the government refuses to act," said Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer yesterday. "The nation's hard-working landlords need help to avoid painful, unnecessary measures, such as finding a job".

Who in the UK is going to be most impacted by climate change?

It's actually a massive massive opportunity for Labour if they want it. The Tories have misjudged the mood and all Labour need to do is say they will retain the original plan. Gives them clear distance from the tories that they can point to, but doesn't actually require them to actually propose a new policy. They'll find a way to cock it up though.

The younger generation. The tories are playing to the older climate sceptical vote at the expense of anyone who isn't a climate denier or doesn't want us to go back to some flag waving never happened 50's utopia UK.

How, exactly, are the younger generation in the UK going to be "most impacted by climate change"?

Doesn't really matter which generation you look at.  They'll all support targets/laws until they become an inconvenience to their standard of living, at which point they'll attempt to either revise them or pass the issue on to somebody else down the line.

No, some of us have concerns about what will happen to our children and their children.

How will they not? Old Betty in Dorset who is 80 years old isn't going to feel the effects in 20 years time, but an 18 year old will.

What effects of Climate Change are the younger generation in the UK going to feel? Why are you seemingly unable to answer a pretty straightforward question?
