Scottish Cup 2021/22

Recommended Posts

The Lowland League fixtures have been published and they include the dates for this season's Scottish Cup. Only the one Preliminary Round compared to the two that's been around for a while.

Preliminary Round: 28th August 2021
First Round: 18th September 2021
Second Round: 23rd October 2021
Third Round: 27th November 2021
Fourth Round: 22nd January 2022
Fifth Round: 12th February 2022
Quarter finals: 12th March 2022
Semi finals: 16th & 17th April 2022
Final: 21st May 2022

Looks like it should be the same format as last season.

But if it's the same as last year, then they've just renamed PR2 to 1R having re-added the Fifth Round name for the last 16.

Assuming five new licensed clubs from the EOS and WOS that's 8 additional clubs so 114 in the Cup, think that means 16 fixtures in the preliminary round.

With several clubs announcing the success of their license applications (subject to formal rubber stamping) do we know what impact this will have on the structure of this season’s Scottish Cup?  I hope that the SFA will learn from last season. It would be exciting for fans of lower league SPFL teams to have a good opportunity to face new teams in the Scottish, rather than than having non-league team numbers reduced too much before the league sides come in.

There's already a thread for the Scottish Cup:

But to answer your question, it should have not affect the format if they use the same one as last season, it'll just be more teams competing in the opening round.

It was thought St Andrews United were going to get their licensed but a post on the EOS forum says it'll be next year instead.

Looks like it'll be 113 teams in the cup then - forgot to account for Forres and Gretna in my previous post, so it should be 15 games and 7 byes in the preliminary round.

If Fifth Round is 12th February does that mean a potential replay would be the week after? Planning on going to Montrose vs Clyde then but worried about spending a fortune on flights/hotel, etc, in the unlikely event either of us are still in the cup and the game gets moved.

Pretty sure at that stage it would be the following midweek i.e. 10 days time.

Cup replays are midweek by that stage I reckon. Usually it's only the early rounds pre-Christmas that end up (stupidly) being the following Saturday.

Don't think the formatting has been made public at any rate yet, replays may still be scrapped this season.

I'm expecting replays to be permanently binned, which would be a shame.

Some of the matches in the EOS fixture list had asterisks next to them in case of replays, suppose we'll find out in a week or so.

Several dozen non-league clubs have only just collectively spent several million £ installing and upgrading floodlights on the principal justification that they are required for hosting Scottish Cup replays. (Precious few will ever stage a televised tie which was the other justification given).

Going by club announcements: by my reckoning there are 113 clubs in next season's cup... being 42 x SPFL; 24 x East of Scotland; 18 x Highland; 16 x Lowland; 7 x West of Scotland; 4 x South of Scotland; 1 x North Caledonian; and 1 x North Junior.

There will be no Midland representation. No qualifying competitions at all were completed last season - all abandoned/unstarted.

Interesting that EOS now comfortably carries 2nd-largest entry.

Dalkeith Thistle, Dunbar United, Sauchie, Clydebank, Cumnock plus Darvel make their debuts... Musselburgh, Auchinleck plus Irvine Meadow appear for first time as members having previously entered as qualifiers. Burntisland, Forres, Gretna, Girvan plus Golspie also return after taking option to sit-out last season.

Queen's Park and LTHV have moved from Hampden and Saughton to groundshare at Partick and Spartans respectively. If work has finished at Burntisland, Girvan, Wigtown and Golspie then every entrant has floodlights which would be 1st-time-ever.

By my reckoning this is biggest entry since 1894. You could also argue it is at last (almost) truly representative of the 100+ 'best' or 'strongest' clubs in Scotland - for first time in perhaps a century. Who are still absent... Pollok, Glenafton, Beith? Hermes, Culter? Lochee?

Suppose it helps keep 3pm KOs as well but the smaller clubs will be out of the competition by that stage.

Work still ongoing at Burntisland and Girvan, finished at Wigtown and Golspie.

Think you basically need most of the WOS Premier to have the best clubs in Scotland, plus the top Midlands teams - Lochee, Broughty, Carnoustie, Tayport. At least a dozen more clubs with a licence next season?

I was thinking more about clubs that had regularly won stuff in recent times. If you are talking pure playing quality you could want the like of Hurlford, Kilbirnie, Largs, Broughty, Carnoustie, Tayport in there as well. If you are setting a bar at the quality already in you could be talking countless dozens of new clubs as Golspie, most South clubs, Girvan, Glasgow Uni, Hawick, etc. are fairly limited.

I think you'll see now a big shift to West and Tayside in terms of more new clubs. St Andrews have obviously come up short this year (issue with their new lights); but I'm not sure anyone else in East are in formal process right now; obviously several are working away on timescales stretching from 1-2 years to many years; and some may have paid the deposit.
