The whole of 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is basically the same as 'You Only Live Twice', except with submarines instead of spaceships.

did Moonraker not just substitute the submarines of TSWLM with space shuttles?

In saying that most of them all bend into one. Try and separate out any of the Pierce Brosnan movies.

I've seen every Bond film up to the Daniel Craig ones at least once, mainly due to them being on the telly constantly when I was a kid.

I couldn't tell you a single thing that specifically happens in TSWLM or Octopussy.

Not really. Moonraker had the villain planning to destroy the world with a nerve gas so he can repopulate it with his own 'perfect' followers.

YOLT and TSWLM had a third party capturing American and Russian spacecraft/submarines in an attempt to trigger a nuclear war when each side blamed the other.

I've read all the Bond books as well as seeing the movies. The books are excellent, set in the 50s rather than the 60s. The closest any actor has come to achieving the "book" bond is Timothy Dalton imo.

Moonraker is interesting as the film has absolutely no relationship to the original book whatsoever. With Star Wars coming out in the 70s, the studio basically thought "Bond in Space" and made a whole new film from scratch. Moonraker is the only Bond book set entirely in England. To confuse things more, they then released Moonraker - The Book of the Movie.

I remember being really surprised by how much I enjoyed The Living Daylights, although I remember Licence to Kill feeling like a very generic Eighties action flick (probably been about thirty years since I've seen it). Timothy Dalton maybe needs a reappraisal as Bond; a lot of people absolutely detested him playing the character at the time, but I liked him and he's always a bit of a treat when he turns up in films.

Then again, there was absolute outrage when Daniel Craig got the part too, and the general consensus seems to be that he's been very good.

I really enjoyed Dalton's two outings especially Licence To Kill but they both seem overlooked compared to the utter dross that were the Brosnan movies

Licence to Kill has the best movie explosion ever commited to film.
