I found a thing about it a while back on some TV forum.  Obviously some games that clashed weren't shown live (aside from Eurosport) while others were deemed less important to things like Wimbledon so were joined in progress.  Some matches were joined at half time apparently when the tennis finished.

Edit - This is the page here -

Hadn't realised that the America's opening match against Italy wasn't broadcast at all and their second was only broadcast from the second half as ITV bumped the first half off for a film!  The Third Place play-off wasn't shown live in the UK at all.

USA didn't play Italy in 94.

A lot of group games, especially the West Coast ones would have been kicking off around midnight.

Japan/Korea 2002 might as well have not been televised, I slept through it.

Really? Wow. Don't recall that at all. Was 12 at that tournament and the first I remember being all in for.

Seems mad there wasn't wall to wal coverage, are you sure? Mad now that terrestrial TV is all over every game in the competitions they still have that that would happen. Doesn't seem that long ago!

Was France 98 the first one that BBC/ITV showed every game from then? Or did it happen at tournaments before USA and just didn't happen there for some reason?

I try to watch as many World Cup games as possible. I don't remember missing many matches at USA 94, and I even stayed up for shite like Bolivia v South Korea, one of the worst games I've ever seen, which literally featured fifteen minutes of extra time at the end of each half as Leslie Mottram lost his mind, and finished at about 3am.

We only had terrestrial TV, so didn't have access to Eurosport.

Was it not the case that a goal collapsed and had to be replaced?

Mexico v Bulgaria in the second round, I think?

Wasn't that big of a delay in the end.

Edit: also Diana Ross in the opening ceremony  :P

The previous tournament to have no home international representation, the 84 Euros, wasn't even covered on British TV except for the final and a solitary group game between West Germany and Spain.

As ever, the past turns out to be a shite place when held under the microscope.

Were all the Euro 92 games shown on the telly? I missed most of it for other reasons, but I have a vague memory of the coverage having some holes. Could be wrong.

The final group stage games at Euro 92 were played at the same time so Denmark V France wasn't shown.

The first two rounds of group stages and knockouts were all live.

The only listings I can find for Round 3 in our group are for England and show Germany v Netherlands on and Scotland v CIS hilights on later.

I'm certain I watched it live but maybe not.

I assume in those days the various broadcasters get what they were given.

I distinctly remember watching Scotland v CIS live, but I may well be wrong. I'm sure BBC Scotland showed our games live though.

Having a quick search for info, I realised we still used Scotland the Brave as our anthem at Euro 92. It was FoS by Euro 96 though

I remember the tournament well as I had just had cable TV put in which I had gone from 4 channels to 300+ channels of total shite.

The good thing with all the shite was that we now had German, French and Italian channels that besides a lot of soft porn also showed all Euro 92 matches.

I also remember after we lost 2-0 to Germany watching the interviews with the German players on German TV, didn't understand a word but Buchwald and Reuter looked like they had been in a car crash.

We had lost bit literally battered them.

On WC 2002, I remember watching one game early one morning but at half time the presenter said that rather than showing the second half live they had an hour long build up to the England game (might have been their game v Argentina?). I didn't have a digital TV at the time as I was a student, so I had gotten up an hour or so earlier for no real reason since I didn't actually get to see the second half.

I hadn't realised that USA 94 was only shown in dribs and drabs in the UK - some games were not shown at all while some were joined in progress.  The only place to watch all the games was Eurosport.
There were certainly quite a few games shown in the late night slot, I can remember sitting up with my dad and watching games after we had both been on backshift.
