Russian invasion of Ukraine

Not a hope in hell Ukraine will agree to neutrality after being attacked they’ll  be more determined than ever to join NATO and the EU, would you trust Russia again if you were Ukraine? Anyone who was on the fence in Ukraine over Russia or EU/NATO will now firmly be on the EU/NATO side.
I wouldn't be too sure about that.

If it's the only way for Ukraine to come out relatively intact they may well think that membership of NATO is more hassle than it's worth - certainly in the short run.

In any case neutrality doesn't mean disarming - it may well lead to more not less arms in Ukraine.

Well it depends, if the choice is a neutral Ukraine or no Ukraine at all ?

How many troops would it take for Russia to control a hostile Ukraine? Winning the war is the easy part, controlling 30+ million would take pretty much Russias entire military, no Ukraine is not happening.

Basically obsolete stuff, especially if coming up against the newer Russian fighters.

ooft.

Newer fighters like ?

  • the hundreds of 4th generation Su-27/30/35 ( Ukraine fly Su 27 btw)
  • or the approx 14 5th generation Su 57 (10 of which are test planes)
  • Russia's 4th generation Mig 29 we'll ignore as obsolete

Yeah, he can easily enough spin that as a glorious victory over the decadent west or somesuch pish with the aid of Russian state media. However if this drags on another week or two his options narrow massively. Economic sanctions will kick in, more and more countries, and indeed sports bodies will ostracise Russia and they could very well be left as complete international pariahs on every level, with a binfire of an economy.

He’s already got the binfire. And frozen overseas assets. There’s a mix!

There is no way Russia’s economy has more than (on my complete guess) more than 8-10 weeks before it completely implodes. And I’d be surprised if anyone in serious power in there lets it get past the next 8-10 days before intervening, dropping Putin’s (and him of his) Ukraine idea and butting TF out of there. He’s had a massive misjudgment.

Or he’ll nuke the place to create his buffer to NATO.

Or he could simply reduce the major cities to glass.

The first irridated crater to join NATO.

Aye nothing sends out the message of peace to the UN, NATO and EU like the mass genocide of a few million people. That’s about as likely as him firing nukes at Washington DC.

We should call his bluff then.

Now would be a good time to be a wheelbarrow salesman for when the Russians ditch their wallets and they start printing trillion rouble notes just to buy smart price pasta.

I think the Russians have seriously overestimated the number of Pro Russians in the Ukraine and underestimated the fight the Ukraine are giving them. They seem to think the government would run and the Army just lay down their arms. They could well have bitten off more than they can chew here as street to street fighting will see them suffer heavy loses with no guarantee they can achieve their aim. Even if they do they’re faced with a hostile population to police of 30+ milllion who are anti Russian.

Firstly I'm not having a go here this is just getting something off my chest as a few folk keep using this phrase to call Ukraine.

It's just called Ukraine not 'the Ukraine'.  That was what the Russians referred it as during soviet times.  So it's a possessive phrase and given the reasoning given for this war it is inappropriate.

Putins more likely to order the firing of equally evil thermobaric weapons into the major Ukrainian cities and that is going to cause civilian casulties on a horrendous scale.
