Russian invasion of Ukraine

Someone has fired rockets or perhaps more accurately RPGs at the state security buildings in Tiraspol, the capital of the Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria. Transnistria borders Ukraine and broke away in the early 1990s following a short conflict. There are Russian peacekeepers stationed there.

There has been some speculation that Russia would seek to attack Ukraine from Tranistria or that Moldova was next on the list for a Russian attack but both seem unlikely. Russia doesn’t have enough troops in Transnistria to make a huge difference in Ukraine and they might expose themselves if they did try and attack from there.

Some reports have said the RPG used, which was left post attack, was marked with a ‘Z’ but who knows.

This shows the RPG left after the attack. Some say you can see Russian markings if you zoom in, I don’t see them. It doesn’t really mean anything anyway, I imagine tonnes of weapons have been captured or stolen.

Chris, do you sit in the house with a rig out like this on?

Definitely some strange things going on right now because this is quite drastically deep into Russia for the drones the Ukrainians are known to have to be effective:

...and how do you explain the chemical plant near Moscow and the weapons research centre in Tver? There are a lot of Ukrainians living in Russia so maybe the Ukrainian side has an ability to operate deep inside Russian territory with sleeper cells but before this conflict started I suspect most people would have expected it to be the other way about with a pro-Russian fifth column causing havoc deep inside Ukraine. Instead the Russians have had to depend on cruise missiles fired from inside their own airspace or from naval vessels for that.

That Russian oil refinery was reportedly attacked with drones. Doesn't say much for Russian air defences if a slow moving drone can fly that far into their country, attack, then fly back again.

Probably to small for anything the Russians have as air defence system/radar  to track

Remember when they had to close Gatwick down for 3 days, despite the most advanced military kit on offer, because they kept mistaking one of their own drones for a malicious one?

That was Gatwick when we had been at war for 3 months and the drone had to fly from the perimeter fence, not France?

I was just about to post that. Small drones can get past air defence systems designed to look for planes. A lot of people thought that the Russians had equipment to jam and take out drones but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Makes you wonder what could happen if/when the UK or the US has to engage with an enemy who have drone capabilities.

No, just suggesting that drone detection is lagging behind drone development.

Not read too much into it  but a lot of these areas including Transnistria and the Russian parts of the Donbas were instigated by turning the police to back Russian interests

Especially when we've handed over most of our good stuff to Ukraine. Maybe that's the evil plan?

You're going to have to correct autocorrect there.
