Former Russian army chief dies suddenly in Moscow

Gen Alexei Maslov’s death came days after a navy official in charge of submarine building also passed suddenly

Gen Maslov was the commander in chief of Russia’s ground forces from 2004 to 2008

A former Russian army chief with long-standing ties to Ukraine has died “suddenly” at the age of 69, the tank factory where he worked has reported.

No further explanation was given by the Uralvagonzavod machine building company, the world’s largest tank manufacturer where Gen Alexei Maslov recently worked as an international sales representative.

Gen Maslov, who was the commander in chief of Russia’s ground forces from 2004 to 2008, passed away on Christmas day at a military hospital in Moscow, the company said.

Uralvagonzavod called him a “distinguished commander who made a valiant journey from a platoon commander to the commander-in-chief of the ground forces”.

Close ties with Ukraine

The former military chief, who hails from a Russian region bordering on Ukraine, had close ties with the country Russia invaded in February.

Gen Maslov’s military career began in Soviet Ukraine, where he studied in a top college for military commanders in Kharkiv. He was later stationed in the Carpathian mountains on the border with Romania.

After his four years stint commanding Russia’s found forces, Gen Maslov was appointed the deputy for Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s then-envoy to Nato in Brussels.

Mr Rogozin, a staunch supporter of the Russian invasion of Ukraine who was wounded in a Ukrainian artillery strike last week, on Tuesday described the general as an “experienced officer, a demanding commander and a good person”.

Gen Maslov’s death came days after a navy official in charge of submarine building also died a “sudden death”.

Alexander Buzakov, 65, passed away last weekend, the day after he presided over the floating-out of a new submarine from Russia’s Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg.

His company described his death as “sudden, untimely and tragic” but did not elaborate on the cause.

Russian tycoon who criticised Ukraine invasion falls to death from window

A Russian sausage tycoon who reportedly criticised the war in Ukraine has died after falling from the third-floor window of a luxury hotel in India.

The body of Pavel Antov, 65, was discovered on Saturday outside his lodgings in eastern Odisha state, where he was on holiday with three other Russian nationals.

His death came just two days after his friend and another local Russian politician, Vladimir Bidenov, was found dead in the same hotel after an apparent heart attack.

Indian police are investigating Antov’s death, authorities confirmed. They told AFP news agency that so far there was no sign of foul play.

Regional police chief Rajesh Pandit said:

All possible angles as regards to the deaths of two Russian nationals are being verified.

Bidenov’s heart attack had likely been caused by binge drinking and a possible drug overdose, he said.

The police chief added:

So far it seems that Antov accidentally fell from the hotel terrace. He was probably disturbed by the death of his friend and went to the hotel terrace and likely fell to his death from there.

Russian oligarchs should always holiday on the ground floor of a hotel.

Interesting overview of where things stand and might now be heading even if the Czech Republic is in a bizarre location in the thumbnail graphic.

Right wing libertarian think tank drifts off into meandering, yes, drivel.

Intermarium, yea, OK….don’t you mean the Grand Duchy of Lithuania?

More Marshal Pilsudski on that one:

and what didn't happen at the end of WWI because Ukraine fell under the sway of Lenin and the Bolsheviks.

Ukrainian nationalists are crazy.

"Don't confuse the landlord and the tenant"....

Presumably your comment is intended to divert from the fact that Russia has been systematically stripping and looting

the museums in the occupied occupied areas of Ukraine.

Bulgakov is not a representative of the Russian state. Ukrainian nationalists seeking to erase culture to revise the entirely grubby antics of their predecessors is not justified by 'but... someone else is doing it too!'
