Russian invasion of Ukraine

Macron sends something that may or may not be a tank, Putin fails to go thermonuclear or attack the Suwalki gap over it,

It's been like this from the start, Putin threatening all kinds of dire consequences if Ukraine does this or NATO does that. An attack on Russian soil was supposedly some kind of red line but Ukraine has been doing it repeatedly and Russia's done hee-haw.

Russia's all fart and no shite.

Ukraine have rejected any ceasefire unless Russian forces withdraw.

Looks like Vlad wants evidence to support the narrative for Russians that Ukraine are the aggressor.

He must have known that Ukraine would not just agree.

Was getting some paintless dent repair done today, and the tech was a Ukrainian. He been in the U.S. for decades, but still has friends over there, and follows some interesting telegram channels. Showed one with a group of 10 Russian troops that had retreated with their two dead comrades bodies after a Ukrainian attack. The commander of the unit lined them up, had two other troops cover them with AK-74’s, ordered the to shoot if they resisted and proceeded to pummel the s**t out of them with a large wooden rod for retreating without an order. Shades of Stalingrad, advance or be shot.

There's loads of stuff like that around, from all kinds of places - Russian and Ukrainian

A female platoon leader was describing how Russia sends waves of conscripts at defensive lines to find the minefields and also to reveal the Ukranian machine gun positions which they then hit with artillery.  They capture some who all tell the same story - being bullied, having kit stolen from them and punishment blow jobs being demanded when they f**k up. There's been a few examples given of Russian conscripts committing suicide after being raped by other soldiers.

Saw that video, it was an officer from another group (maybe Wagner?) who beat them up, their own commander ordered them to retreat with the casualties.

Even better. I had assumed it was Wagner and not Russian Army because of the violence being something above what even the Russian Army would use. I almost expected it to end with a genuine decimation!

Patriarch Kirill's supposed to have come up with the idea, not sure what autonomy he has but Putin probably couldn't ignore it.

Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, on the Christmas truce: And to whom are they offering this truce? To ourselves? There is a simple solution: let them pick up their suitcases, pick up their trash and go to Russia. Dot. Where is religion and where are the priests? A pop who sends to war to kill innocent women and children, who gives instructions for rape, what kind of pop is this? Some crazy country.

Well at least there was no sledgehammer involved. Early on in the war there was a clip of a Ukrainian soldier kneecapping Russian POWs that definitely wasn't for the faint hearted. No doubt an isolated incident but sometimes people are going to lose the plot in these situations and cellphones mean their escapades get recorded now in a way that wouldn't have happened back in the day. Think we get shielded from a lot of the gorier stuff because Youtube and Twitter have become a lot stricter about what they will allow to be posted than they used to be.

...and sites like LiveLeak are away. The days of shock sites appear to be gone.

The obvious response to that would be "good" but, much as with cinematic depictions of violence giving people a weirdly cossetted idea of how little damage it does, I'm not sure that keeping the realities of war away from the public is a good thing.

It really is pretty shit how low us supposedly intelligent human beings can go isn't it?
