Footballfirst
This is what the SPFL stated prior to the draw in 2022. With five SPFL clubs again taking part in UEFA competitions next season, the draw will involve the remaining 37 SPFL clubs from 2021/22 plus Highland League champions Fraserburgh and Lowland League champions Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic. The additional slot will be taken by Highland League runners-up Buckie Thistle as the Lowland League were granted the extra place last season. And this is what was said in 2021 With five SPFL clubs taking part in UEFA competitions next season, the Premier Sports Cup group stage draw will involve the other 37 SPFL clubs from 2020/21 plus Highland League champions Brora Rangers and Lowland League champions Kelty Hearts. The new, additional slot in the group stage will be taken this year by East Kilbride, who finished as runners-up in the Lowland League this season. This follows the drawing of lots between East Kilbride and Fraserburgh, the Highland League runners-up. So there was a precedent of tossing a coin between the HL and LL for their runners-up. No mention of clubs relegated in previous seasons being part of the drawing of lots. Edited June 9, 2023 by Footballfirst

Now which do you think applied in this case? I don't think that many are critical of Cowdenbeath accepting the invitation, but there are many who are critical of the decision to offer an invitation to Cowdenbeath in the first place. It didn’t then say and this is the methodology that will be used in succeeding years nor was it put into the rules. So maybe the idea was we will do this for a couple of years and once HL and LL runner up have had a shot each we can then do something something different. Is there now in your view a new precedent set that the last SPFL2 team relegated not automatically in the Cup will now be invited in 2024/25? That may or may not be the case

That's fair enough, but can the moaning not be done on the League Cup thread though in that case? Saying that, it is a particularly slow time of the year for any other chat.

We get given bungs in the most subtle and descrete method of getting put in the League Cup draw. Surprised the bung was ever noticed. Very stealth.
