Agree with this. Thigh is a far nicer cut IMO and tastes better than breast.

I was in Tesco for some kind of seasoning the other day and had a look at their prices for meat and can't believe folk can afford to do a weekly shop there. Absolutely extortionate. f**k knows how expensive Waitrose is now. We use Lidl and go to Morrisons for the wee bits we can't get there. Though I was in Home Bargains the other day and never realised they did as much fruit/veg and meat. Their chicken is cheaper than Lidl. Next shop I'll be starting there before heading to Lidl.

Agree about doing the butchering yourself as well. 8 skinned and boned thighs at Lidl is about £4.40 the now. It's about £2.50 for the same portion but with skin and bones. Cut it yourself and save the money is a no-brainer IMO.

I would not be going to Home Bargains for chicken. Lord knows where they source them.

Lidl do a whole corn fed free range chicken at a reasonable price.

Pretty much everyone can eat less but decent quality meat.

Tinned sardines are an excellent, cheap and healthy source of protein for pasta meals. Tinned mackerel (especially in tomato sauce) makes a cheap and easy protein for a fish curry.

Cheap vegetable sources of protein are chickpeas and most tinned/dried beans and peas. Swap out half of the meat content of a meal with a can of those instead (chickpeas for curry, tagine etc.; kidney beans for chilli; white beans for pasta). Dried lentils are also a good option for soup/daal.

A good mix of different frozen veg (peas are 60p a kilo - mix and match from there) is also well worth having.

Peppered mackerel is a favourite in the household but it's mental how much that has gone up in price.
