Iker Casillas

Assuming these are genuine tweets and not hacked (only because those two being in a relationship would be an incredible story).

As to your question, I suspect not. Maybe even the opposite as it perhaps re-enforces the belief that you should not come out until you retire.

Well done to him.

It's a very sad indictment of the football world that very few players have felt comfortable enough to "come out" as gay - and the most well-known gay footballers Thomas Hitzlsperger and now Iker Casillas have only felt comfortable enough to "come out" after they had retired.

I'm am almost certain this is a hacking unfortunately. May be a mistranslation but the Puyol tweet just didn't sit right. I'm gay before anyone accuses me of anything

Rumour mill and speculation but saw a claim online that the spanish media have recently been linking him with different women (think hes divorced with kids but something something oscar wilde) so this is him mocking them, puyol might be in on it.

If that's true then this is pretty poor from both.

If he is joking then it's a very poor joke.

Reported now that he is not gay and he tweeted he was because he is fed up with papers linking him to a different woman every week.

Huge error in judgement by Casilias.

He should just have pished himself in the true pie and Bovril way if he wanted to discourage women.

The only thing worse than Casillas and Puyol using being gay as a joke is the amount of people that a) were horrified when they thought it was genuine and b) find the joke hilarious.

Well being treated as a joke & some kind of freak is really going to help others come out & just be accepted for who they are rather than be seen as an object of ridicule. Utterly pathetic but no chance they will be disciplined for their homophobic actions.

What a disgusting thing to joke about.

There are some countries in the world - including the country hosting this years World Cup - in which homosexuality is a crime punishable by imprisonment and death. Many people all over the world struggle with their sexuality because they feel that they cannot be their true selves. The suicide rate in the LGBTQ+ population is significantly higher than in the general population.

People should be free to be their true selves. It doesn't matter if they're lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer or whatever. Unfortunately this is not the reality in some countries.

Joking about "coming out" is not funny in the slightest - because there are people in the world who would give anything to be able to do that, but cannot because they fear the consequences. Unfortunately, in the countries in which homosexuality is illegal, they are right to fear the consequences.

An awful and thoughtless "joke".
