German coup attempt

Remember when the centrist social democrat Jeremy Corbyn was widely described as “far left” by every single news outlet in the country?

The UK has drifted incredibly to the right over my lifetime. It’s like boiling a frog though, so incremental. Things like trying to repeal the HRA and leave the HCHR, sending refugees to Africa and outlawing most protests would have been BNP policy when I were a lad.

Thank goodness that we have a Labour Party that when they come to power will reverse this trend and…

Oh, wait…

Labour are now in my book on the same part of the spectrum as the Democrats in the states, they’re centre right.

Yeah, comparisons have been made in the past to the states and are probably no more relevant than now.

However since a previous occasion the Labour Party did have Corbyn as leader!

Ted Heath would be seen as a leftie these days and Macmillan practically a Communist.

A German celebrity chef is among those arrested. His daughter is David Alana’s partner.

Which British celebrity chef do you think is most likely to lead an attempted coup? Anthony Worrall Thompson for me.

Pickelhaubes. Replaced by the classic "Stahlhelm" or "coal scuttle helmet" in 1916 the pickelhaube was introduced to the Prussian army by Frederick William IV in the 1830s and was based on a Russian design. The spike was one way of deflecting sword blows to the head from cavalry

I would've enjoyed seeing that training. "Right lads, I know you're worried about getting gutted/slashed/decapitated by all the swords you'll be up against, so we're giving you a hat to deflect them with. If you see a sword I want you going in head first."

What's the difference between Anthony Worrall Thompson and a cross country run?

One is a pant in the country....

I don't think the UK state has changed at all in my lifetime which covers Thatcher onwards

The difference now is that the era of easy growth is over so the state has to show it's teeth in terms of cracking down on dissent from the left and whipping up the kind of hatred that gives the ruling class a social base to appeal to.

It's exactly the same in the EU though and the only (non Warsaw pact) countries that probably genuinely have moved to the right are the 4 northern former social democracies.

You can be in parts of the USA and think you are in paradise on Earth then go 100 miles and see horrific poverty and extremely racist policing. We live under a flexible fascism.

When i was born, shortly before Thatcher came in, the UK state owned a couple of telecoms companies, car companies, oil companies, a massive steel producer, the railways, the coal mines, the water companies, the gas and the electricity. University education was free.

You could argue that we've become more socially liberal, but we've gone from being relatively socialist to something more like pre revolutionary France, except with CEO s intead of aristocrats.

German coup?  Scratch the surface and you’ll get an Austrian connection…

His daughter, Shalimar Heppner, 28, has a son with Real Madrid's Alaba, who also captains the Austrian national team.

Old "fingers" Thomson's career never came back after he was caught nicking wine from Tesco, really.

So yes, I'd agree. time on his hands, rage against The Man for arresting him, beard. All the signs are there.
