The Usual Suspects seems to have been re-evaluated in recent years. Folk who don't like it claim it's garbage because it gives the illusion of being a smart thriller with a clever twist ending, but hate it because there are basically no hints about the twist before it lands, and in retrospect it basically amounts to

  Reveal hidden contents

a bunch of people turning up dead on a boat, with an unknown survivor reeling off an entirely manufactured story, before being released right before the interrogator realises that not a word of it was true. We don't even know who Pete Postlethwaite and Kevin Spacey are playing in the final shots.

Personally, I've no problem with that; it's a thoroughly enjoyable film due to the way it's told, rather than because of the story, which is a bit meta. It's better than Sex and the City 2, so I'll add it to the bottom of my list for now.

Also, Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey have repeatedly been accused of sex crimes over the past fifteen years or more, along with generally being unpleasant douchebags, so that may well have had an effect on the film's legacy.

I think also, for the younger generation who are watching the film for the first time now, the twist is just a part of popular culture.

So you already know what is going to happen going in, which definitely took something away from the film for me. Similar for The Sixth Sense.

As you've specified a couple of films that are/have received remakes, you might be interested to know that Jacob's Ladder received a remake a few years back. Good news - apparently it's shit!

Also, the original version of Funny Games was a lot better than the remake, as I recall. Worth checking out.

I had read that the remake of Funny Games was identical to the original, so never really bothered with it.  Been a while since I saw It though, so I suppose this is a good time to get it watched.

Saw a trailer for the JL remake last year - yeah, that can GTF
