What is the actual point of the SNP buying a campervan. Who does this benefit? Did they get up one day and say. I think we should spend some of the donated cash on something. What should we buy. I know. Let's buy a Campervan.

Peter and Nicola were going to be the new stars in BBC Scotland's docu series Life On The Bay

Looks like they bought it on the hoof.

Exactly, they should have waited until majority support for independence was more stable.

Humza Yousaf has said that the SNP won't refund any donations and that all the money will be spent advancing the cause of an independence referendum.

"will be spent".   He does know that his use of tense here is completely wrong.

They won't refund donations because the money has been spent.

The direct quote from Yousaf

Quote

Well, first of all the £600,000 is part of the police investigation, hence why it’d be very dangerous for me to comment on it.

“But it’s very much a focus as it’s been made public, by the police. So that is the focus of the police investigation. Look, money that is raised from the membership by the party, we’re going to spend that in advancing the cause of independence referendum…

“We’re not reimbursing people for the donations that they have made. People make donations to the party because they want to advance the cause of independence. Every pound and penny that we spend as a party will be on advancing the cause of independence.”

This is why I think the police enquiry must have veered away from the ref2 ring fencing, it would hard to prove that any money spent by the SNP isn't directly or indirectly in the cause of independence, and if not, spending 2 years on it seems a lot of resources to spend on a pretty marginal issue.

It's fairly safe to say that £600,000 will be spent by the SNP on indyref 2 whenever it happens. Whether or not the exact pounds of donated origin should be moulding in a bank account until then is a matter of, to me, legal niceties.

you could argue though that the SNP would have spent 600k on an indyref2 anyway even if this 600K wasnt raised. The idea at the time seems at least that the people donating thought this was exclusively for an indy ref2 campaign and was ontop of any amount the snp might spend. It would seem now that it wont be ontop of any SNP spend, as they already spent it and they wont magiically make 600k appear to replace it.

I agree.

But if, as a consequence of the investigation, they don't find anything substantive outside of that you mention above, there are going to be unionist heads gone all over the place !

I'd hope that the SNP would be able to raise many millions if another ref was happening, I just don’t think the £600k is a big deal, unless it was stolen of course, instead of either sitting in a bank account or being spent in the cause of independence (ie. just about anything to promote the SNP).

Good luck with that. £600k gone on a motorhome, jewellery and pots and pans? Whether proved stolen (I doubt that'll stick eventually) or just frittered away I somehow think there might be a wee credibility issue for the fundraisers to address in any future rounds with the begging bowl...
