Bairnardo
Prepared to consider Ireland aswell as the North/West /Isles of Scotland, but where I am needing help is with recommendations on where to go. Ideally I am looking for self catering cottages/lodges etc with stuff to do for kids (6 & 8 ). Ideally for them I want to do outdoorsy stuff like beaches, raking about forests/parks etc etc but not too far into the beyond as rain may necessitate seeking indoor opportunities......... Anyone got any ideas?
GordonD
If it's Ireland or even the Islands it's not a staycation. Staycation is where you stay at home (the clue is in the name) and have a day here and there. It is not just because you don't go overseas.

welshbairn
Haven't been and don't know the area, but other than that this looks quite fun and isn't ridiculously expensive. https://www.catchpennyelie.co.uk/

Go to Coatbridge and break the surface scum at the Time Capsule. Pass through Airdrie on the way back.

Stornoway would be a good base with good restaurants, cracking seafari boat trips, Stornoway Castle woods, and there's plenty of beaches to explore.

Bairnardo
Appreciate all the replies, and indeed the pedantry over the use of "staycation". For which, I really should apologise as it is a wanky term. That said, I have settled on Ardnamurchan.
invergowrie arab
Ardnamurchan is about as far into the beyond as you get on mainland UK. Fingers crossed for good weather then.

Honest Saints Fan
Aviemore? You have landmark, wildlife park, Loch Insh, Loch Morlich Beach, lots of walking. I've personally used this company https://www.silvergladesaviemore.co.uk/ and the accommodation was very good and a good location

Take the boat from Kilchoan to Tobermory and tell them they are in Balamory, and also a drive past the Monster Midge. Both of those should keep the kids happy. The lighthouse should also appeal to a kids sense of adventure
MONKMAN
Southwest Scotland >>> Highlands. Less campervans on the roads, generally cheaper hotels/lodges/holiday-lets. Dumfries and Galloway is Scotland's best kept tourism secret.
throbber
Speaking of Aviemore area Me and my family have stayed in this place three years in a row Bairnardo - it’s a 5 min walk from landmark and you could easily go there with 2x family of 5. https://www.seasgairlodges.com/properties/2
