Rutherglen Glencairn 2023-24

Recommended Posts

Another draw against a promotion contender in Kilwinning Rangers, and again it's hard to grumble with the outcome.

I thought we created the better chances and came closest to scoring, but after our goalie was sent off in the 89th minute we were happy to take the point.

Five points separating the top seven teams. We've played two of them in the past two weeks, and we have another three of them to play in our next four games.

If we're still in touch with the promotion issue after that (given we'll have played most of them twice by that point), then I'll start to think we may have a chance of a top 3 finish.

Time will tell.

Overall lack of games today due to some sort of upcoming cultural event, so took my first ever visit to see Rutherglen Glencairn.  Quite a decent wee set up there and the wife gives her compliments to the bridies!

The game was better than it should have been in the cold, windy, dreich weather. Thought Glencairn were just about the better side, but not much between the two. Thought Glencairn were going to open scoring when a shot from distance hit the bar, then soon after thought Kilwinning had it, but the well hit shot from distance was really well saved.

Draw, while probably not doing either side any favours, was about a fair result.

Well another opportunity spurned to go into the promotion spots, and that was obviously a poor result for us today. We're not scoring enough goals in comparison to the other teams in the top half of the table, our defence is fine but we're certainly needing to improve our chance conversion rate.

It doesn't help when you have five strikers on the books and four are injured and the other one wants a transfer, we had to play three quarters of the match without a recognised striker today.

Still, halfway through the season, and only four points off the top, with a game in hand, and we've still to play everyone except Drumchapel and Whitletts.

Is our squad strong enough to go up this season ? Time will tell, but our next three games (Shotts, Petershill and Blantyre) will tell us a lot.

The management team are continuing to re-shape the squad for the second half of the season. We can confirm that striker Paul Brennan has returned to St Roch's after the two clubs agreed a deal, while on-loan right back Matthew Doherty has returned to his parent club Benburb. Also, defenders Ronan Shiels and Leon Boomer have been released from their registrations. We wish all four players well and thank them for their service to the club.

If anything sums up how close the teams are in this league, it's our last two matches. We lost away to bottom placed Whitletts Victoria, and then we win away to league leaders Petershill.

The circumstances of today's win were probably more enjoyable because we turned what was looking like an unfortunate defeat into what could be a really important win in the space of ten dramatic minutes.

We played all the football today. Even at a goal down with 7 or 8 minutes to go, we resisted the temptation to go long and continued to play the way Joe and Billy want us to play.

When we equalised, it would have been easy to accept what would have been a fairly decent point, but if you watch the video you'll hear Joe's shout to defender Ants Maguire to go up front even before the restart. He chose to go for the winner and got his reward in the 94th minute. Brave management.

We ended the game with two defenders (one being retired from playing and now first team coach Tam Miller) and two 19-year-olds making their debuts up front. Tam was thrown onto the bench at the last second as our injury and illness ravaged squad was hit further by Ross Smith pulling out a minute or two before 1.30pm. Thank you to the referee and Peasy for agreeing to the change in the team lines and the subsequent slight delay to the kick off.

Our squad is stretched to the limit at the moment, so that was a huge result for us.

Our "up and down" spell continues. 🙄 Blantyre absolutely dominated the first half today and were sharper all over the park, stronger in the tackle and more committed. Joe made three personnel changes at half time and changed the shape, and we were much better, but we could only half the deficit as Blantyre have a strong defence.

Hopefully we're back "up" again for the derby match next Saturday. 🤞

Blantyre are a very good solid team and any team must win the battle first before  the game. John Gibson doing a great job with limited resources.

That was as comfortable a win in a derby match as I've seen from us, and it could have been a few more. The pitch was not in good condition, but Joe picked a team and formation to deal with that, and we actually managed to play some decent football on it.

I said at the start of the month that, if we were still in touch with the promotion race at the end of January then we'd have a chance. Well we're 4th place and 3 points behind the leaders with a game in hand, so we're very much in the discussion. The teams below all have a few games in hand, but points on the board are always better than games in hand, so we'll see what happens.

A really tough fixture for us next, at home to Cumbernauld Colts in the South Challenge Cup, they're 2nd top of the Lowland League and in good form. Still, we'll go for it, nothing to lose really.

Seeing Owen McGinty mentioned in the video and his father speaking about him.

Owen’s had six clubs in two years and has lost interest in playing for others quickly. Hopefully he settles at Cambuslang but he must commit and accept he won’t always be picked if he wants to do well. He may have played for Rangers youth alongside Billy Gilmour, but that doesn’t matter now.

Three clear dives by McGinty yesterday, the second of which was embarrassing and earned him a yellow card. Goodness knows why he did it as he had beaten our defender Dom McLaughlin, perhaps he was trying to get Dom sent off as he was already on a yellow card ? In the end McGinty was fortunate not to get a second yellow himself for another dive after he'd been booked. The referee wasn't fooled by any of them. He's a cracking player, but he needs to cut out that rubbish.

Disappointing to exit the South Challenge Cup in a penalty shoot-out after matching Cumbernauld Colts from the top of two leagues above us in every aspect of the game this afternoon. Still, we can take a lot of confidence from that.

We've actually only lost one cup tie all season, as we've gone out of the Scottish Junior Cup and the South Challenge Cup on penalties, I don't class those results as defeats. Penicuik Athletic are the only team to have beaten us in a cup tie so far this season, in The Scottish Cup.

Results elsewhere this weekend also meant we stay in 4th place in the league and very much in the promotion discussion.
