Hop Skip & Jump: the Scottish Groundhop 2024

Next year's bonanza focuses on Perthshire bookended by West Lothian and capped by trip to deepest Clackmannanshire.

Perhaps unlikely to match this year's record-breaking figures but hopefully another success.

I still blame these tossers for knackering Edinburgh City's unbeaten LL season as we had to kick off in bloody Dalbeattie at 11 am on a Sunday! 12.15 in Whitburn is nothing compared to that one.

Indeed ye look forward to a Saturday, a new ground, new acquaintances and new bar(s) then ye get hit wi Sunday church times.

Good enough incomes for the home sides but can certainly be an inconvenience for the fans that turn up week in week oot.

If clubs could opt out the whole arrangement would instantly break down anyway.

Everybody loves to be the host and stage a big spectacle match plus rake it in by £ thousands; obviously there needs to be an away team for it to happen, so they experience a minor inconvenience (for which they receive couple of £ hundred these days mandated by league)... Gala had to get to Whitehill for 11am on a Saturday back in 2016 and it put 200+ on the crowd.

Preston alone have been a visitor more than twice - and, leaving aside a couple of oddities like Lochmaben, among those who have visited everybody eligible to host has done.

Looking forward to this Saturday/Sunday (I’m skipping Friday night).

Kicking off Saturday with a stravaigin around the general area of Dunkeld and its silvery Tay. Having prayed for the energy to sustain me through four games of fitba at the cathedral, I will set my course for Luncarty.

Three new grounds for me from the five games, and a first visit to Whitburn in something like 20-years. Only Jeanfield will be something approaching familiar.

Will be looking forward to being thoroughly head-counted by nearly everyone else there, and I will especially enjoy being counted by the people who bring the wee clicker things and walk round the pitch clicking away to their hearts content. (I remember the days when getting a click on a Saturday meant something different entirely.)

See you at Kiosk Kev’s, if you’re going.

Given locations - plus some hosts carrying 'modest' core supports - I doubt 2024 will approach 2023's records, but hopefully we see some good crowds.

Several games - particularly Luncarty v Crossgates and Whitburn v Whitehill - also have lots riding on them.

2015          2,269     average 379          16 goals     2.7 per game
2016          2,002     average 334          16 goals     2.7 per game          (1 game was unintended*)
2017          1,303     average 261          18 goals     3.6 per game          (5 games only)
2018              886     average 222          29 goals     7.3 per game          (4 games only as 2 postponed^)
2019          2,271     average 379          30 goals     5.0 per game
2021          2,240     average 374          29 goals     4.9 per game
2022          2,383     average 398          19 goals     3.2 per game

After about 36 hours of constant rain in Perthshire it seems to have stopped in the last hour

The grass at work is under water so i wonder what chance if any the 3 Perthshire games have of being played tomorrow.
