Alloa v City

Recommended Posts

After finally getting our triumphant first point last week, can we carry that momentum into this weekend and pick up another one?  Or even better can we pick up our first win?

Loads of positives from our performance last week and hoping for the same this week.

We did play well in spells last week, and it looks like finally,  it's coming together and the first win (or two!) are not far away.

However, we still need to learn how to defend better and keep a clean sheet to give ourselves a chance.

Alloa will no doubt see this as an easy chance of a win, so there should be goals and an entertaining game.

Pretty sure we'll win - last week, despite the painful end will have boosted confidence. Having said that we are still very naive defensively so can obviously get a doing.

1-3 City. Shanley, Handling and Spence from distance (finally) to give us our first 3 points of the season.

Hoping for a win and an Ogayi masterclass and clean sheet.

Think Rice is safe in his job just now but a loss and poor performance today could change that.

Hopefully our two new loanees get off to a flying start and help us kick start our season

Felt we played better football without Sammon up top as an out ball and actually used our midfielders. Roy and Wales looked decent, fit in well even though they wouldn't have had any time to train with the team.

Steven was good first half but his head went after his mistake that led to the goal, thought he should have been taken off 10/15 mins before he was, after his mistake he kept giving the ball away instead of playing simple passes.

Debayo looked good, liked his willingness to run at people. Devine was poor, kept getting beaten in the air.

Couple of really good saves from City keeper. Overall City didn't look like a team that had only picked up one point.

A lot of boos and shouts for Rice to go at the final whistle. Feel it'll be hard for Rice to win those fans back now.

That was yet another really poor result in a very disappointing season.

We played some decent football at times and thought Taggart, Roberts and Roy all had good games.

Certainly better to watch than it has been, but we have to be beating Edinburgh City at home.

better than last week , Roy was really good should add something to the team,

one silly mistake cost us the win Not a lot Rice can do about that

we can do better but thought Edinburgh were better than thier position would imply .

Got a point thanks to Ogayi when we deserved nothing last week and feel that’s what Edinburgh got thanks to MacAdams this week. A couple of his saves in particular were extremely impressive.

Thought we actually played well enough today, definitely an improvement on last week, trying to move the ball around rather than launching it long - was a bit like the midweek game to be honest - but it’s still a very poor result at home to the bottom team.

New boys did well, Roy in particular - makes a big difference having a striker we can play a ball in to who can control it and then bring a teammate in to play.

We were a bit of a shambles defensively in the first half and were fortunate Edinburgh couldn’t take advantage of almost always having an unmarked man when they went forward, but looked a lot better after halftime.

Wonder if we will see Taggs moving in to midfield after his display today 😂 was the driving force and unlucky not to score a couple!

Yeah, that was my main takeaway. Roy, Wales and Steven gave us good movement in forward areas and that encouraged us to play more of a passing game. Probably deserved the win, but not too much in it and another soft goal (if well finished) cost us.

Thought Taggs and Steven were best for us; young Taylor is now an important member of the side, works hard, good first touch and sees the game well.

I agree the defence settled and did OK after a shaky-ish start. Not sure if Morgyn Neill is carrying an injury or was just dropped. Devine and Debayo both did OK though. Keeper did OK too.

Tough one next week, but we do have a good record up there, so who knows.

An improved performance today and we played a lot more through the midfield instead of going long to Sammon. It was also a game that we really should have won, the City keeper had a couple of cracking saves and I thought that we were on top pretty much throughout (although the last 10 minutes got a bit end to end). Edinburgh scored in a period where they were barely in the game and although it came from a clear Alloa mistake you have to say that it was finished very well.

Having said that there are still some pretty large caveats, not least the fact that despite playing reasonably well we didn't win against a poor team who are sitting bottom of the league. I also thought that our crossing was poor for much of the game, and we got into good positions and then didn't make the most of the opportunities. The defence also continues to look shaky when put under pressure.

There are also plenty of positives not least a debut goal for Ally Roy in what was a pretty encouraging performance. Hopefully as he, Wales and Stevens play and train together they'll develop a bit more of an understanding.

The new attackers certainly brought far better movement and link up play than anything we've seen so far and made for a much improved performance (although a long way from "first class" as the manager suggested). The new faces should get better with more games and there is also potential to get even more out of them if we can get the likes of Scougall, Donnelly, Cawley etc fit and on the same wavelength as the attackers.

For all that it's still a poor result. Edinburgh looked very brittle yet might well have won the game. It was a very poor goal to concede from the defence (thought Ogayi might have done better there too but will need to see the highlights) and there were other chances. For all it was an improvement on last week there is still an awful lot to work on if we're going to win games consistently.
