I read that 6 countries get auto qualification.

If that's true, then it at least eliminates the possibility of Morocco missing out (you'd imagine Spain and Portugal would be fine regardless).  But it doesn't solve the farce of SA qualifying, or the mental idea that 6 spots are taken up automatically cos 1930.

Utterly mental this. Even if you do include the 3 South American countries in this bid to commemorate 1930, surely you give them more than 1 game there? At least you can play 1 group in each of these countries in its entirety, then plan it in a way that whoever qualify from those groups have 2 extra days rest before the second round to allow for travel. It would still be crazy even then, but at least less mental than the current plan with 1 game in the 3 SA countries.

Given the huge cost of hosting the World Cup these days, maybe the CONMEBOL countries were happy with this compromise? 🤔

At this rate, it will only be the preserve of regimes that are desperate to sportswash their image nice and clean, and FIFA will be absolutely fine with that.

They must have been kicking themselves that they didn't manage to squeeze in a German World Cup before WWII kicked off properly, but I suppose Mussolini was the next best thing.

it's a joint Italy-Turkey bid for Euro 2032.

... which itself may imply 32-teams: otherwise Italy should "go it alone"?

Correct.

Laughable.

The FIFA World Cup was planned to take place in 1942. Germany officially applied to host the 1942 FIFA World Cup at the 23rd FIFA Congress on 13 August 1936 in Berlin.

Sounds like an absolutely dreadful idea to go alongside the shan 3 team groups.

FIFA are a nonsense organisation.

I thought FIFA were rethinking the 3 team groups because of the issue with them not having all teams finishing their games at the same time?

Doubt they ever intended 3-team groups... simple sham, so could claim the maximum games would remain 7 when expansion announced.

Promptly dropped... supposedly once they realised 3 = odd number.

If FIFA won’t give a World Cup to Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay then what hope does any South American country bar Brazil have of ever hosting a World Cup again?

Load of shite.

Unfortunately this is just to fast track a 2034 Saudi bid when by FIFA's own imposed 'round robin' rules, they shouldn't have been eligible for a bid until 2042.

So essentially what you have is Qatar getting a full tournament in 2022, all of North America sharing 2026, Europe, Africa AND South America (who will get 3 of the 100+ matches as a token gesture) sharing 2030 and then back to probably Saudis doing it on their own in 2034. A return to the Middle East only 12 years from the last one after all their rhetoric about sharing the tournament fairly.

You can obviously say that Australia or China will fancy a shot at hosting and doing a good job at it and the Aussies in particular are probably overdue one, but really, is there any point in bidding vs Saudis?

For me, it's absolutely mental that we'll likely never see a World Cup hosted on these shores in our lifetime.

Easy tiger - who knows how big a despotic mess Britain will be by 2038?

Ah, but we won't have money though, Shame.

FIFA has now announced "interest in bidding" for 2034 closes on October 31st...

... 2023 !

That's in just over 3 weeks.

Australia given 25-day deadline to challenge Saudi Arabia’s 2034 World Cup bid | Football Australia | The Guardian

AFC chief says he wants a sole confederation bidder: Saudi Arabia.

“The entire Asian football family will stand united in support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s momentous initiative".

Total stitch-up.

Unbelievable! After all the bad publicity over the Russia / Qatar double award they've only gone and done it again 😯

Of course they have. They made a huge amount of money with no consequences.

There's absolutely no downside for FIFA in this.
