General Election 2024

Now we discover that Neil Gray and Shona Robinson have been trying to block additional funding of £2.9 billion from Westminster for local Councils in Scotland, as it doesn't fit their 'narrative'. Despite starving Councils of cash themselves for years and ushering in another Council Tax freeze to appease the Middle Class, the SNP now block this money 'because' its from Westminster.

Dr Jedi PhD really loves these Tory policies, doesn't he, And now, the "Scottish" Daily Express, appears to be his favourite news source.

Anyway, the SNP weren't trying to block the money coming to Scotland, they were objecting to Westminster interfering in devolved matters, and the unfair distribution method.

Let's have a look at where they money went, and whether the council area overlaps with a Tory Westminster MP

Moray (Douglas Ross MP)

North Ayrshire

South Ayrshire

South Lanarkshire (Lisa Cameron MP)

Glasgow

Dumfries and Galloway (Alister Jack MP, David Mundell MP)

Scottish Borders (John Lamont MP)

Gosh! Apart from Glasgow, most of these areas have significant numbers of Tory voters, and money has been shovelled into the council areas of 5 of the 7 Tory Westminster MP's.

Obviously, every other council area got absolutely nothing.

No wonder anyone interested in fairer distribution of taxpayer's money objected, but not Tory Jedi.

Glad to see my favourite Internet troll dismussing yet another source as 'lies', and apparently I am now a Tory to boot, presumably unless exclusively citing the crayoning and coloring in of The Na TiOALl or www.snp.org (these are the only 'truth tellers' out there)...or maybe that noted truth teller Pete Murrell...

Anyway...to more important matters on oil and gas and the revenues during either a Blair or Thatcher govt:

Oil and gas revenues peaked in the early 2000s, hitting an all-time high (in cash terms) in 2008/09. But adjusting for inflation, revenues were much higher in the early 1980s, amassing – in today's prices – nearly £35 billion in 1984/85.

This time the source is www.economicsobservatory.com (Gosh, not the Express)

Did Labour try to set up a National Wealth fund for Scotland in the mid-80's (to answer the question)...No. However, they were a bit hamstrung in doing so by a large Tory majority at Westminster which enabled said Tories to do whatever they wanted.

Uh, Jedi, I never used (or implied) the word 'lies', so why put it in quotation marks?

The source of my information was the article you cited in the Tory Scottish Daily Express, and a basic knowledge of Scottish MP's constituencies and geography. I never said it was lies, just pointed out a different interptrtation of the Tory largesse to Council areas with Tory MP's

Do you disagree that 5 of the 7 Tory MP's benefited from money being shovelled directly into their local council areas?

Do you disagree that the other 25 council areas got f*ck all?

Using taxpayers money to help Tories is a pretty Tory policy, isn't it?

As a proud socialist, why don't you object to this unequal distribution of wealth?

Incidentally, your pathetic namecalling and inability to make any point apart from 'SNP baaaad', without providing any credible proof just makes me think that slinking away from the board and returning as Jedi3 after the election may be your best strategy.

So Labour didn’t do anything when the Tories were in power but then carried on not doing anything when they came to power.

That’s some argument.

Sunak pledging to bring back national service for the woke youth. It will no doubt be a bit of a shock when they realise they can't Deliveroo or Uber their way through it. 🇬🇧

National Service.

There’s nothing like a well considered and thought out policy.

And this is nothing like a well considered and thought out policy.

That sound you can hear is the final nail getting battered into the Tory election coffin.

Never a surer sign that a party isn't going to be in government than when they start talking about bringing back National Service.

Are we starting with the auld c***s who got away with not doing it in 1963? Anything other would just be punishing the young and total hypocrisy, and I'm sure that isn't what this is about at all. Get the idle elderly marching round those parade grounds - it's what Captain Major Tom would've wanted!

Edit: there's also the tagged-on addition of "or you can do some volunteer work in the community", which I'm guessing is their cunning wheeze for providing care for the elderly poor and other annoying social welfare programs without paying anyone for doing it. We'll be hearing more of this in the future, I fear.

Don't disagree that Labour could (and should) have taken the chance between around 2000-09 to build up a National Wealth Fund from oil proceeds. Obviously Thatcher as expected squandered that cash in the 80s on funding the S.East and N.East of England in particular.

So could Labour have done better on that front? Absolutely. I am more than happy to acknowledge faults in Labour govts of the past and (hopefully) future btw 😀

National Service is a great idea. We need more cannon fodder.

I'd almost like it just to see them try and give exemptions to EPL footballers.
