No more non-Scottish teams, more Highland and Lowland teams and the B teams being kept. Hold me back.

The SPFL has announced a new format for the SPFL Trust Trophy for Season 2024/25.

This new format will involve only clubs that play in Scottish leagues – and will see those clubs playing in next season’s SPFL Trust Trophy sharing a record-breaking prize pot.

An estimated £790,000 in prize money will be shared with clubs for the 2024/25 SPFL Trust Trophy – an increase of 58% on this year’s competition.

Next season’s winners will receive £100,000, which is a 100% increase on the amount won by this season’s cup winners, Airdrieonians.

Further sums are available as ‘facility fees’ for all live TV games, with the final pay-out to clubs set to exceed £800,000 for the first time ever.

The draw for the opening rounds of the SPFL Trust Trophy will take place in early July.

Neil Doncaster, group chief executive of the SPFL, said: “We’re really pleased to announce record prize money for the SPFL Trust Trophy next season.

“The SPFL Trust have been fantastic supporters of this important cup competition. Their investment, and the continuing generosity of James and Morag Anderson, is greatly
appreciated.

“We have very much enjoyed the participation of cross-border teams, who have competed in six seasons of this competition since they first joined in Season 2016/17.  However, their involvement does further complicate our already congested fixture schedule. Hence the SPFL Trust Trophy will revert to a Scottish-only competition next season.”

Full schedule of prize money

Winner – £100,000
Runner up – £60,000
Losing semi-finalists – £40,000
Losing quarter-finalists – £30,000

4th round losers – £20,000
3rd round losers – £15,000
2nd round losers – £10,000
1st round losers – £5,000

In addition, each club playing (whether home or away) in a live televised SPFL Trust Trophy on BBC ALBA will receive a facility fee payment of £1,500.

Barring any jiggery pokery to get Cowdenbeath or Albion Rovers in (and who would put it past them), the 11 non-league clubs included based on league finishes would be:

HL Top 5 - Buckie Thistle, Brechin City, Fraserburgh, Banks O'Dee, Formartine United
LL Top 6 - East Kilbride, Bo'ness United, Cumbernauld Colts, Tranent, Civil Service Strollers, Linlithgow Rose.

Ah yes, I see that the cartel have looked over their own boys after all, so it's the four ex-SPFL clubs from the LL who are in rather than it being merit based.

Glad to see the Welsh and Irish teams punted - we should not have a Scottish tournament where prize money is leaving Scottish football - but these weans'  teams need punted.  No place for them in a senior competition, it absolutely devalues it.

When it started, the inclusion of the foreign teams was probably bringing money into Scottish football via the TV deals with Premier Sports and S4C. Then those obviously fell by the wayside a bit, probably because viewing figures weren't as good as they hoped.

Whilst I'm sad to see them go and raging Morton never got one, the prize money point is valid- especially with it increasing.

£100k now for the winner not to be sniffed at.

The chance for a cracking away trip now gone, while the B Teams keep their places. Get them all punted and expand the Highland & Lowland involvement.

Absolutely disgraceful to simply invite former SPFL Lowland league clubs who didn't make the top six either. They have absolutely no right to be there and that's a serious amount of potential prize money being denied to Tranent, Cumbernauld Colts, Civil Service Strollers and Linlithgow Rose who should be there on merit.

Yeah agree with the idea of putnting B teams and just inviting the entire HL & LL.

If any HL or LL team declines an invite drop their invite down the pyramid to the likes of the NCFL or WoSFL.

They still have to overcomplicate it to include B teams.

They have the simplest format ever staring them in the face: 30 lower-league SPFL teams + the winners of the Highland and Lowland Leagues (or losers of the L2 play-off). 32-team straight knockout.

The B teams thing they just copied the EFL trophy in England and implemented it at the same time in 2016. They will probably wait and see if they remove them before copying.  If they ever consulted the fans and looked at attendances they would see B teams in Challenge cup are not wanted and degrade the competition.

Is a bit of an improvment but why B-Teams, Doncaster seems determined to have them take places from league teams & not just in this cup.

Doncaster doesn't give a shite. Top division clubs have told him the format and who'll be in it. Lower division clubs have chucked their old pals a bone.

The presence of B teams in the Challenge Cup was the quid pro quo for the Premiership clubs agreeing to the group format for the League Cup.  This guarantees one game against a Premiership side for almost every team in the groups.

Obviously the LL invites are a farce but that's a decent prize money package.

If the LL were a serious league they would surely lobby for a merits based qualification as it would only improve their league having meaningful positions to play for
