Never mind, tomorrow's Daily Record will be running stories on a Burkino Faso starlet desperate to play for the Hoops and Rangers chasing an injury-prone Montenegrin currently playing in Surinam.

Exactly.  f**k the old firm - totally their fault we’re shite

Just a hands across the ocean bit with the Copa America, that has an Italian calling some matches.

As for the debates, there simply needs to be a fundamental change in the way the game is approached. Better development of youth players would help, the current schemes don’t do it well, but that would take money that simply isn’t present in the Scottish game. So there are players worldwide that could play for Scotland, but they really haven’t been recruited (or even searched) outside of England. Look at the Hungarians, plucking an Englishman out of nowhere because of a story in a club program. There are certainly more players than the three or four currently playing overseas that Clarke included, and the relative size and strength of the English League contingent just highlights the weakness of the Scottish Premiership in terms of developing players.

Until the SFA and SPFL get the money issues fixed, the current TV contracts are pitiful, and evens the playing field to improve player development, this “plucky underdog” story will remain a replay of Groundhog Day in major tournaments.

Its been said before, but a switch to Summer football would perhaps help define a more skillful game.

The SFA and SPFL will do f**k all. It's the other parties issue as far as they are concerned.

It's a shame but your right in that we need to be looking overseas for better produced talent. My laddie plays basic grassroots football (U10) down here in Somerset. The coaches have done  UEFA and FA Licences. Basic grassroots! Funding for their Licences came from the club who they are affiliated to, who play in Step 7 of the English football league system. These clubs, and the FA, recognise the importance of decent coaching to youngsters at an early age. Also, his school team coach is about to do his UEFA B license.

Admittedly, England have won nothing and long may that continue, but their quality of player has increased by some margins over those they had in the 80's and 90s.

Surely there's finance in Scotland to get these structures in place? I know there's the JD performance schools in Scotland, but more trained coaches at grassroots should start to bring the standard up.

Like your point on summer football too.

We knew we needed a goal but he makes his attacking subs at 75 and still didn't address the problem - the lack of width in the system that we created to accommodate Robbo, Tierney, Hickey - one of whom was playing.

This. Clarke has always had a system figured out that relies on Scotland being at optimal strength/the players who have played the system in the past. Once these players are unavailable he doesn't seem to know what to do.

It’s a scathing assessment and it’s completely true imo. Georgia and Albania have been miles better than us.

I think that was the two weakest teams in the tournament tonight, certainly the two most unambitious.

Also the fact that Conway got 0 minutes in the whole tournament is a bit of a disgrace.

Doak would’ve got fuck all minutes too. Criminal.

Proven by the excellent qualification and tournament showing of Eire, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and so on.

Oh no wait: literally the only country using it are Georgia, who qualified from Division C.

Summer football would be fucking shite.

It would also last from January to December, and have to stop for tournaments from late May to early July every other year.

But enough of these facts.

We've been doing these failure 'reviews' since Farry and Taylor. We're still awful at producing top talent, maybe worse than ever.

You are right, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. We won’t fix it though as the tail wags the dog. League is set up is wrong, get players into the 1st teams of our league teams is not good, plus the money in the game is underwhelming and used to buy foreign players in the main.

until all that is looked at as part of the review then we are just going around in circles I’m afraid.

Couldn't agree more.

At my sons age group, the schools Scottish cup final was between 2 Dundee teams, only 3 players actually attached to clubs.

Not enough scouting goes on, and the players that are missed, lose interest and are gone from the game for good. With 90% that are selected, dumped.

Lost count of the amount of boys who never played beyond boys club. Not saying any of them would have made the grade; but you never know.

One boy I knew from 5 year old, a keeper, was always passed over because he was tiny. At these Easter Tournies did South was always asked by local FA youth coaches which pro club he was with. When told he was considered too wee they would walk away muttering 'typical Scottish football'.

Oh at 2 of these tournies he was voted best player by other coaches and organising committe.

He never played past u17's.

They have also made it more difficult for youngsters to join Junior clubs by ditching the duel contracts. This means that Junior clubs have to full on sign the player, using up squad space and wages, so they are not taking as many on.

Ok so we didn’t play well - infuriatingly cautious approach from Clarke again, our midfield overestimating the ability of our central defenders (who saw more of the ball than anyone else in the team) to actually play football by continually giving them the ball rather than looking for a forward pass, and a complete lack of pace and creativity in the team, but how VAR wasn’t asked to have a look after Stuart Armstrong was rugby tackled to the ground in the box simply defies belief.

Hungary were the better team nonetheless, and deserved the win, but the behaviour of a few of their ‘fans’ - there was fighting in area where we were at the end, and these were the expensive seats, with a Hungarian guy throwing punches at Scotland fans (including a poor woman caught up in the fracas), then launching projectiles at the fans trying to get away from him - was utterly disgraceful.

Hope the Hungarian player who was injured in the collision with Gunn is ok, looked like a bad one.

Sick of the same old hard luck stories from the Scotland football team. Just not good enough yet again, sadly.
