I bought a new telly last year, I am now sent scrambling to find the remote control every evening due to this message popping up on the screen.

"Your TV will be turned off in 5 minutes."

F@&k off. I'll turn it off when I'm finished watching.

There's not an option somewhere in the menus to turn off the sleep timer? Or, at least, set it to something like 8 hours?

Nice. If you're ever looking for a roommate...

Swamped in marking at the moment. One assessment I did was ask students to undertake a critical analysis of a published academic journal article. I'm part way through the marking when one student said that the article had copied its text and results from an earlier article.

No way, I thought.

So I downloaded both, looked at them side by side...and bloody hell. Had that paper been coursework it would be straight to the discipline committee. I have never, ever seen anything like this before. Big chunks of text identical, or as near as.

The student got a bunch of extra marks for finding that out!

Flag it with the second journal, most have policies against submitting the same work (or very similar works) for publication and they’ll probably investigate/retract it if they agree.

Might be set to Store or Demo Mode.  Had that problem with mine

You planning to Lee Wallace the author to the journal?

I contacted the authors of the original paper to let them know - it's their fight, not mine.

They're in Malaysia and one of them got back to me to day he graduated from the uni I teach at back in 1981. They're going to contact the journal editors.

I'm still a bit shocked that these academics even tried it, never mind that it wasn't picked up at the review stage or by the journal editors. As I posted above, I contacted the authors of the original paper to let them decide how to take it forward.

I'd have to say that a Professor that doesn't teach, academics breaking plagiarism guidelines, a peer-review system that didn't pick up on it, and a failing editorial process might be seen as a lot of things, but petty isn't the first thing I'd call it.

Fair enough - maybe should have put it in the uni thread!

Sadly I’m not that shocked they tried it - it cools even be that it’s not them, paper have been attributed to academics before who knew nothing about them. I am a bit surprised that the journal editors didn’t pick it up. The main publishers use software to spot plagiarism when work is submitted but if it’s a smaller publisher, they might not catch it.

Mrs. B knows that at heart I’m an 8 year old boy so she got me a selection box.  Freddo and friends as she knows I’ve never had a Freddo in my puff.

Cracked it open earlier.  There’s a quarter of a fudge and a quarter of a curly-wurly in it.  Fucking scam.  Stick full size chocolate bars in selection boxes.  If I want mini-sweets I’ll fire into the celebrations.

First selection box in years and the c***s have ruined it.
