Well, they lost in the end, but I thought they had a pretty good run given the way the season looked to be going in Feb/March. The collapse at the end of game 2 was the killer, but overall I wouldn't say they looked mentally weak. Credit to the Kings, who really improved over the last 3 games, and of course Quick was great throughout.

Yeah, they did pretty well. I'm still not sure why they made the Havlat trade. It's never made sense to sign a guy who is so often injured, when you consider what they gave up. Don't know how they stand re: salary cap, but I can imagine a couple of marquee signings to bolster the squad.

Pens succumb to a third defeat to the Bees with a certain Jaromir Jagr playing particularly well. I can remember him winning the cup alongside Lemieux in the early 90s. He's transcended generations. Already the finest European player of all time, a cup now would top a remarkable career.

Seem to recall him being the go-to guy on EA Hockey for the Megadrive.

As I'm growing up, I'm looking to broaden my horizons within sport. Looking to get in to American sports a bit more especially. Already follow NBA partially.

Anyway, picked up an old NHL game for Xbox and like the feel of it so going to follow it me thinks.

I got my girlfriend to pick a random team for me to do a season with and she picked the Penguins so I think I'll consider them my team.

Any tips for a newbie getting into the sport?

Bruins sweep the Pens & what a stunner from McQuaid to win it!

As for getting in to hockey, it's a bit of a pain in the arse just now, as there's bugger all UK coverage, I just try and stream online when I can. It's basically the end of the season and the Penguins have just been swept by the Bruins in the eastern conference finals & will take on either Chicago or LA in the Stanley Cup Final, the Hawks lead that series 3-1, with the next game in Chicago.

This season was shorter than normal due to a player lockout and started in January, the season usually starts in October.

Once into it you'll probably pick your own team, mine is Vancouver. The NHL website is pretty good as are the Hockey Night in Canada and Hockynews ones.

I'm a bit of a n00b with hockey as well. Picking up premier Sports on Sky is good, even if you don't watch the live games, NHL tonight (every night) is class.

I went to an Ottawa game in Canada a few months back, so had to choose them.

Anyway, first original 6 Stanley Cup final since 1979? (assuming Chicago win...)

Play the game in any form if you can, or at least watch one of the HBO 24/7 NHL series. It's the best up-close look of the game and will probably make you appreciate a lot things casual fans don't really extensively think about.

Will do mate cheers.

Think I'm going to go along to an Edinburgh Capitals game during next season to get a feel for it too. Although I imagine British hockey is nowhere near as good.

The standard is nowhere near as good, though there are quality players in the league, some former NHLers. It's not as intense, but there's still good skill on display. You'll appreciate hockey much more if you watch it live though. It's not really a good sport for TV because of its fast pace and small puck. Caps games can be a lot of fun and a better option than sitting indoors on a Sunday.evening hating the fact you have work in the morning. New fans are welcomed and people will be glad to explain the intricacies of the game to you.

Also, Edinburgh Capitals are definitely the team to support if you're a Jambo. Quite a few Hearts players have taken in matches over the years. Not too long ago Rudi Skacel was on the back page of the Daily Record wearing a Caps jersey next to Edinburgh captain Martin Cingel who was in a Hearts top.

The season should start again around early September. Hockey's a very friendly sport and fans of both sides socialise together before and after games (The Hampton Hotel is generally the place to go for a pre-game pint). That said, we don't like Fife, Dundee are, well, from Dundee and Braehead are a plastic team playing out of a shopping centre.

Yeah, we did a deal where those who bought tickets for a certain match last season were getting into a Capitals game the same weekend for a fiver, or something similar. I didn't take up the offer unfortunately.

I'll look forward to some Scottish rivalries.
