I've joined the Glasgow facebook group, but haven't been on an outing yet as I've just started c25k.

What kind of shoes do people wear? Is it really that important to get your gait analysed and stuff?

Glad to hear that - hope to see you at some point then.

Re shoes - if you are going to be doing any sort of distance then you should really get fitted by a specialist running shop like Run4It, Sweatshop or Achilles Heal. It is really important to wear the right type of shoe as it massively reduces injuries.

I used to wear cheap trainers but went to run 4 it and got analysed and properly fitted, my running related injuries have reduced dramatically since. I do have flat feet though so unsupported trainers are a bit of a no no for me.

My sister complains of flat-feet too, hopefully it's not a family issue!

Glad to hear that - hope to see you at some point then.

Thanks. I've walked past AH many times before, think I'll pop in one day. It's interesting because apparently loads of people are turning back to supportive shoes after the barefoot craze that occured a year or two ago.

Here's the facebook group for those in Glasgow btw - https://www.facebook.com/groups/224012937626179/

First run of the year tonight. Really let myself down towards the end of last year after a very good summer. Managed a decent enough paced half hour before calling it a day as I was feeling tight. Hoping to get out tomorrow again. Strangely looking forward to it.

I ran round Arthur's Seat today in just under 30 minutes. I think I could probably do it quicker, I'd never done it before and when I do a run for the first time I usually go slower. I'm going to use that as a benchmark and do this run every couple of weeks in the run up to my 10km in March.

I also used my GoPro camera for the first time, I now have a long film of me blowing out of my arse

My resolution this year is to get fit and stay fit this year.

Done a bit of running before but got to the point where I just scunnered myself. I have a gym membership that I'm going to use but I also want to clock up some decent miles and maybe sign up to a few runs as well this year, something that was a good motivator before.

The Nike stuff sounds good. I like the idea of group running but not really seen anything for Kirkcaldy. Given the nick I was in on Saturday morning it may be a few weeks before I follow that up.

There may be 1 or 2 jogscotland groups near you.

Couch to 5 K seems like the most common beginner routine.

As it is January and I know we will have a few new posters on this thread, I though it would be a good idea to repost about the new 2 mile run that I am involved with at Glasgow Quays. If anyone needs any extra info then feel free to PM me or post below.

Are you looking to get a bit fitter? Do you want to get into running? Are you intimidated by big races/Parkrun? Are you looking to go for a social run were all are supported and encouraged regardless of pace?

If the answer to any/all of the above is yes then you should consider Great Run Locals Glasgow event. The timed run starts at 10am every Sunday morning at the Squiggly Bridge (Tradeston Bridge) and it is a two mile (3.2km) there and back course. There is also a bag drop at Run4It on Bothwell Street from 9.30am (just knock the door as the shop itself doesn't open until 12 noon).

It is not a race and it is designed for people looking to get into running, although anyone is welcome.

The volunteer team includes several members who were very unfit and overweight at one point (including myself) and therefore we can relate to people who are in this situation and want to turn it around.

To sign up for your free timing band go to http://www.greatrunlocal.org/register and for more info search for Great Run Local Glasgow Quays on Facebook.

I hope to see you at the start line next, or any other, Sunday morning.

Fife AC have a training group in Kirkcaldy and their website says they cater for all abilities, so might be worth a shot. They meet at Balwearie, I think on Mondays and Wednesdays. A couple of times last year I was just finishing some repeats on the track down there when they were getting started - seemed a decent sized group.

What do you guys know of New Balance running trainers?

Never really ventured away from Nike but are they a reliable trainer. I've saw some pairs in tk maxx for £30-£40 and could do a job

I've just bought a new pair of running shoes (Karrimor) to replace my now worn new balance running shoes, had them for 2 years, took a wee while to get them run in but apart from that they were a durable solid pair of running shoes, you'll have no problems with them, good buy.

Off out tonight to see what these January sales bargains do for me.

I got these bad boys for £27 (RRP £53) in the Jan sales - been out on them twice, lightweight, fit really well, barely feel the impact on my heels/ankles.
