Say for example if England continue to bat until they are all out, and that occurs at 4.30 tomorrow afternoon. Does that mean they only get to the end of day 5 to get Australia all out? Fuctifano Posted July 20, 2013 Share Posted July 20, 2013 There have been two tied tests in history, and also two tests which have ran out of time with the aggregate scores level but with the side batting last not being all out- these are classed as draws rather than ties. They did experiment with "timeless tests" back in the 1930s, but they scrapped it after one went on for 10 days on a batsman's paradise and the England team were going to miss their boat home (seriously). I was only being facetious about England getting a lead of 1000, they'll declare at some point tomorrow morning. Re: replacement for KP- I think he'll be fit as there's a break after this game but would James Taylor not be next in line- if Root had failed again this game there could have been an argument for shunting him back down and bringing back Compo but they'll probably want a specialist middle-order player to replace KP. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yeah, it's been pretty much all about the psychological aspects now. England could really have declared at any point today and they'd probably have enough runs but when one side is so far behind then if you're on the side that's dishing it out you can toy with them a bit- it keeps their opening batsmen wondering when they're going to have to bat and grinds their bowlers into the dirt (which is why the two spinners bowled for the last hour, Clarke was trying to keep the fast bowlers from totally knackering themselves). I personally would have pushed a bit harder, tried to score really quickly after tea for an hour and a bit and declared with 7 or 8 overs to go tonight to give Anderson and Broad a spell tonight and then again in the morning while the ball is new but again there's the mental aspect of Cook keeping them waiting- he could even declare after one ball tomorrow if he wants. If Australia can bat the 150+ overs to see it out for a draw then fair play but all evidence so far would suggest they won't and by some distance. Agreed that they should hammer home the advantage but I'd be wary of writing off the Aussie even in spite of the gulf in class......they're always capable of a gutsy performance.....in their nature.
