If Buttler can get a score in this test I think it'll put Bairstow out the side for the winter tour. Get Sibley in at the top with Burns, Denly at 3, Root, Roy, Stokes and Buttler and then your 4 bowlers. Let's see how that works out.

I'm okay with Bairstow playing as a batter only.

An interesting thought looking ahead is who the 4 bowlers should be for the winter tours. NZ is as close to English conditions as you'll get on tour so you'd imagine Anderson and Broad are shoe-ins. That leaves, potentially, Wood, Archer, Woakes, Overton, Curran, Ali and Leach fighting it out for 2 spots

Is there any point in taking Woakes when he becomes a village player as soon as he gets through passport control? If Stone and Wood (both might be better named Glass) can stay fit, those two plus Archer & Broad are your options with Curran in there as well, as...

I also think Anderson should retire, would have been fine with this series if he'd stayed fit and he could probably still do a  lot of damage in NZ  but Test Championship be damned, England's only goal in the next 3 years is to win in Australia in 2021-22 and he'll be 39 by then. I actually think he might retire once this match is over despite what he's said in public til now.

edit: if I'm reading the ICC Future Tours thingy properly, the away series vs NZ isn't part of the WTC as teams only play 6 series: England's are this one then SA (A), SL (A), WI (H), PAK (H), IND (A) so there's not even that excuse.

I agree that Woakes does not travel well but NZ conditions will probably suit him, write him off for the Saffers & hope that the brothers Glass can break into a trot for once as they will do well on their pitches.

What is the conversion rate pre and post being appointed captain?

For me I'd remove the captaincy from him because its clearly impacting his batting form and he's shit at being captain.

Since getting the captaincy he has had 23 knocks of fifty, he has converted just five of these into centuries  21% rate

Prior to captaincy 35  11 of which converted   -   31%       -      Overall record of 27% -  now have a look at the top 20 converters of all time.  Kane Williamason is way down in 70th with a rate of 40%  Sorry for the shit font

I just don’t think England have enough good Test batsmen. Even guys like Stokes, Bairstow and Buttler who we know are capable, are they really that capable at Test level? Look at the top 10 batting averages of Eng/Aus players.

Steve Smith - 64.81
Joe Root - 48.09
David Warner - 46.01
Travis Head - 42.70
Usman Khawaja - 40.66
Marnus Labuschagne - 38.53
Jonny Bairstow - 36.12
Ben Stokes - 35.86
Jos Buttler - 33.07
Tim Paine - 32.62

Have slated Mitch Marsh plenty myself, but felt a bit sorry for him watching this interview.

Bowled well today, and if his batting stands up he’s got a real chance at the number 6 slot.

Another likeable Australian cricketer. This needs to stop.

I don't think the Aussies will be too bothered at not getting England all out near the end. It certainly delays Warner's inevitable lbw to Broad until tomorrow morning. If they can get England out for 300 tops and Smith doesn't do anything daft I'd expect them to get north of 400.

On that deck I really wouldn't be surprised if Smith goes for Lara's 400 himself.

Maybe he'll settle for 329. That'll give him 1000 runs in the series, having missed 3 innings, which is utterly bonkers.

Surely he's got to get out cheaply at some point.
