Blantyre Vics 2-0 Cumbernauld United.

Relegation 6 pointer in the West First for us today. Our first visit to the KG Stadium. Quite like it, perfectly adequate for this level apart from the pitch which makes Bonnyrigg look like a bowling green.

Easy win for the hosts, Cumbernauld never looked like scoring and two first half goals took the game away from the visitors who are looking likely to suffer a 2nd successive relegation.

Edinburgh City 2-2 Kelty Hearts. Due to family stuff this was only game I could get to this afternoon. Really should not be allowed to play league football at this venue. It’s just not fit for purpose. Draw probably finishes City’s slim chances of making the play offs. City’s second goal was pick of the 4.

Kippen 1-3 Aberfoyle Rob Roy

The Forth and Endrick league is back, so I decided to go to this game between 2 returning teams. Kippen returned after a 5 year absence, while Aberfoyle resigned from the league early last season. The standard was quite poor, poorer than I'm used to in this league, so I can see both clubs struggling against the stronger teams. Kippen were actually the better team when judged on the outfield players, but they didn't have a goalkeeper, so an outfield player had to play and he was pretty poor in goal, which cost them the game. There was a bit of a fight at the end resulting in 2 red cards, first time I've seen reds in this league!

It's a tidy wee ground on the edge of the village, just next to a new development so I had to walk through a bit of a building side. They have a main building with dressing rooms, toilets etc., quite decent facilities for this level. Also for the first time at this level, I noticed a 50/50 draw was being held, I didn't win unfortunately!

Well done Crow, memories of when I did the Northern League a few years back. Stayed in South Shields, Redcar and Whitley Bay while I did all the grounds, tourist stuff etc. Some great places and grounds : favourite Crook and Billingham Synth.

Brilliant part of the country for watching football Andy. I need to get to Crook soon.

Spartans 4-2 Hamilton Academical (2-2 HT) @ Ainslie Park Stadium 🌱. Scottish Women’s Premier League. 1pm. Great game with the visitors twice levelling in an end to end 1st half. A stunning free-kick 🚀 from captain Alana Marshall and an own goal won it for Spartans. Crowd 121.

San Francisco Italian Athletic Club 0-0 San Francisco Glens; 23/04/23

Two teams that wanted to play football the right way but didn’t quite have the quality. Sometimes you just need to play it long. But a lovely day for football down at the Beach Chalet pitches in Golden Gate Park, 100 yards from the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco. Beautiful setting and not often you wander past bison to get to a game.

Apparently the San Francisco Football Soccer League is the oldest league in the US in continual existence - it was formed in 1902. SFIAC won the US Open Cup, America’s national cup competition, back in the 70s. Glens also have a semi-professional team which plays in the USL League 2 (US fourth tier). Probably about a dozen people watching.

Köln (W) 0-2 Frankfurt (W) - 38,000 at the RheinEnergieStadion - which I believe is some sort of record. Local beer Kölsch priced at a reasonable €6,50, €2 of which you get back for returning the cup. A decent enough game but an absolutely stunning ground.

Then a train to Mönchengladbach before getting a bus - which was free with the ticket - up to Borussia-Park for Borussia Mönchengladbach 0-1 Union Berlin. Big screen in the beer garden outside of the stadium to watch the earlier kick off, then into the ground with a few more beers and some currywurst (which was unreal) - safe to say they’ve absolutely nailed the fan experience in Germany. Would recommend it to anybody, although I had quite a sore head this morning and had to watch the highlights back to find out what actually happened!

Women's Champions League semi-final 1st leg as Wolfsburg Frauen hosted Arsenal Women at the Volkswagen Arena.  Wolfsburg 2-0 up after 24 minutes and seemed to be cruising. Arsenal got a goal back right on the stroke of 1/2 time. 2nd half was a bit of a stuffy affair, Wolfsburg unable to kill the game off. Arsenal with a deserved equaliser in the 70th minute.

22.617 in attendance which was about 2.000 more than the Wolfsburg mens side had at their game the previous week against Leverkusen. (realise there is a difference in cost / standing of the Wolfsburg women's team in German Frauenfussball, but even so).

Went ahead and got the VIP tickets at the Nou Camp for the Atletico Madrid game on Sunday past, and I must say it went well above my expectations. Free food and drink for 90 minutes before and 90 minutes after, as well as premium seats inside the stadium. Only thing that was a disappointment was half time where we were directed to a lounge in the main stand only to be told that we had the wrong colour wrist band on, and by the time we got to where we were supposed to be it was nearly the start of the second half.

Probably not something I will ever do again but for a one off or a special occasion I would definitely recommend it, very well treated by the staff and it does have the feel of a ‘VIP’ experience. My fear was that the price would leave a dampener on the occasion if we felt that it wasn’t value for money, but although it’s an expensive day out you got the feeling that the club/staff have went all out to do all they can to make it special. Got talking to guys from America, Finland, Italy and the Netherlands on the walk back to the Metro and all of them seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

Weds night. King Cup 1/4 Final at the San Fergie, Rosewell.
Whitehill Welfare 0 Lochore Welfare 1.

In a poor game WW had what looked like a clear goal disallowed with the last attack of the game. The linesman was probably unsighted by the number of bodies on the line. I was about level with him but higher up, and had a better view than from pitch level, and it looked clearly over the line, especially as the goalie dived down and clawed it back before lying on it.

However nobody could decide whether there would be extra time or straight to penalties. If it was the former, then even the WW faithful were reasonably happy to go home rather than face another stodgy 30 mins on a chilly night.
