  1. Did a NIMBY murder your cat Dave? It seems like a petty stick to beat him with tbh.
  2. Can't agree that this was a bad game. I loved it, and I was surprised by that as I'm no fan of the CL. Modric, Carvajal and Courtois were the absolute stand outs for me. The link up and understanding between Benzema and Vinicius was a joy to watch at times. Modric's pass into Kroos that started the move that lead to the goal was beautiful. He's the player I want Gilmour to become. So aye, I thought this was a cracking game.
  3. That was a great game tbf. The defensive display by Madrid was thrilling and after they weathered that storm of the first 40 mins it was an even game. Some of the counter attacking play by Real was sumptuous. That's the best goalkeeping display I've ever seen I think. Modric is just an unreal footballer. Here, what a career Ancelotti has had. Part of a fabled Milan team and then one of the greatest managers ever.
  4. Nice to see Robbo keeping his powder dry for Wednesday.
  5. Courtois is an unbelievable keeper. This arsehole commentator is making me want Real to win.
  6. What a fucking goal. Modric's wee pass under pressure to Kroos was absolute silk. Delightful play.
  7. Great game now. Diaz v Carvajal is a compelling battle. Talking if Diaz, I wouldn't fight him if I had a Bazooka and an Uzi. Absolute unit of a boy.
  8. Liverpool looking very, very good. That Kouate chap looks fantastic.
  9. What's even more fucked up is that they learn (especially black boys) early on that they're considered a threat. I was out for coffee here with a black friend from Cleveland, Ohio. It was the cafe at Duthie Park on a wet Saturday so it was hoaching with weans. Said weans were doing as they do, running about, playing and being a bit boisterous. My friend told me that in the US there is no way black children would be able to behave that way. It had actually become a perverse source of pride among black mothers that their children were much better behaved and obedient than some of their white counterparts, but it came from the knowledge that black boisterousness could (and historically was) misinterpreted as threatening.
  10. Aye, it's euphemistically called "the talk" by Black people in America.
  11. Like a lot of stuff that comes out of the mouths of republicans, the "arm teachers" hogwash is just a tactic to distract from arguments for actual gun reform that the majority of Americans want. They can't even provide them with jotters and basic equipment never mind the requisite training and a fucking gun. I saw a good thread on this recently where a guy went through what training would mean. It takes a lot of training for a soldier to be able to kill another human being and to overcome his natural urge not to, so teachers would be having to undergo intensive and long training. I'd like to hear @Trackdaybob's tuppence (shilling, probably) worth but I imagine soldiers also have to be trained to view the world in terms of enemy or friendly. Given the somewhat troublesome psychology of some American teachers in very mixed schools this would make it an even less safe environment for young black pupils. Also, f**k living like that. Given a lot of the school shooters are children, these teachers would have to be trained to overcome their natural urge not to shoot a child. What does that mean for their psychology on a non-threatening day? Firearms skills are also perishable, so they would have to train frequently. You'd also have to replace the doors and walls of classrooms so that a bullet can't go through them. A teacher shooting at a pupil and missing (or even passing through said pupil) could lead to further fatalities if the bullet goes through a wall or door. The GOP is now the party of aggressive stupidity though, so them presenting simple solutions (however stupid they are) will be enough for their voter base for now, regardless of the danger it poses.
  12. Do you guys have no rubbish in your bins or is she just preternaturally strong? I'm confused as to why she wouldn't have noticed that the bin was full and that this may have been a strange thing to bring towards the house.
  13. Where would be a good place to look? I know I could google it, but I'm wondering if you have some oft visited news sites, youtubers or podcasts you like for this.
  14. I have nothing to add on the Gervais topic. I found him quite funny for a bit, but I think there's an inverse relationship between how political a comedian becomes and how funny they are. Connolly was great, but started doing more opinion stating than comedy act and thus became less funny. George Carlin wasn't that funny for the latter decade of his life and Gervais has become the same. I think comedians have a shelf life. McIntyre's bit on the kilt outfit and some other observations on British life have had me in stitches, but there's only so much material you can get from that. There is also probably a few good reasons (aside from financial) why Graham Norton, for instance, doesn't do stand-up anymore. Certain schticks just aren't funny these days. Gay camp humour doesn't shock people into laughing as it once did, and Carr's aloof causticity just looks mean spirited now. I haven't found too many british comedians I like, so my recommendations come from across the pond. Iliza Schlesinger is brilliant. Her observations do focus at times on what it is to be a woman, but it's fresh and she is a very physical comedian too. She does a bit about how she wants to watch an episode of Shark Tank (like Dragons' Den) where the contestants have a meltdown and I've honestly watched it about 5 times. Nikki Glaser's stories are almost always about sex (even the one about why she won't share a bed with her dog) and she has a talent for making it a bit weird and sometimes even a bit uncomfortable. The bit about her dog is tremendous. She does a lot of that "roast" type comedy which I can't stand, but if you like that then fill yer boots. Bill Burr probably needs no introduction, but he's a classic trickster/jester and I would say a pure comedian. He'll come out with a rant ("men should get paid more than women", "Gays getting the whole of July for pride is a bit much" or "I'm sick of hearing from Michelle Obama") against something that is universally (or at least performatively) agreed to be a good thing. He'll then proceed to comedically and cleverly make his case and playfully hold up a mirror to our own hypocrisies. His appearances on Conan are worth a watch too. Louis CK is my absolute favourite. He's the only comedian who can consistently have me in silent, wheezing hysterics. An absolute master of his craft.
  15. I saw this yesterday and here's my longish take on it. It's pure nostalgia and undiluted fan service. If you loved the original movie then this will hit all the right notes for you. There's the bike, the bar, the opening credit sequence and there's very, very fast aeroplanes. In a world of boring CGI this film is a throwback to edge of your seat practical effects. In that respect this is a pure Tom Cruise action movie. You get the sense that he is actually flying and that it's risky (although he isn't, but you get the drift). The action scenes are an absolute joy, and as posters have said above, watch it in cinemas, or IMAX you can. Maverick is still cocky, but a bit more humble. He doesn't want promotion. He's a pure pilot. He's poked at for being "just a captain" but he wears the jacket comfortably. When we see things that we remember from childhood we get a surge of dopamine. This is relevant because this film is full of nostalgic beats that feel very manipulative and actually get in the way of the story. A lot of the high praise for this movie come from people for whom the original movie (or movies like it from that period) mean a great deal. The nostalgic dopamine wave means that parts of the movie that were actually really poor, are ignored. The sheer relief that Maverick wasn't Skywalkered I think overrides the desire to critically evaluate a film whose dialogue sounded like it was written by a 10 year old. There's a scene with Ice Man (great to see Val Kilmer again) that should carry weight, but the dialogue is "live, laugh, love" levels of quality. The dialogue throughout the whole movie is terrible actually. There's an entire plot involving one of the pilots who has a link with Maverick's past. It takes up the whole movie and, I felt, got in the way of developing the other characters. It was a sub plot straight out of a telenovella and it felt like an insult to the intelligence at times.. The casting is great though. Jennifer Connelly is becoming more beautiful as she ages, which is some going as she was a stunner as a younger woman too. She plays Penny with warmth and humour. The chemistry between her and Cruise is great. I would liked to have seen that relationship develop more tbh. The young pilots are brilliantly cast too, and Miles Teller is a fine young actor. The time dedicated to the relationship between Maverick and Rooster means that these pilots are just undeveloped side characters who get little in the way of an arc. it's a real shame. The action scenes, as I said, are absolutely wonderful. The first time Maverick is out flying with the new young squad had me punching the air in delight. It's brilliant and hugely satisfying. Overall I give this 6/10.
  16. Serves me absolutely right for not reading that link and instead just believing the comment that introduced it to me like an absolute moron. Thank you.
  17. Is there a golf tournament you could be watching while this is on? Worked a treat last time tbf.
  18. The polis didn't do nothing. That's a scandalous lie and you should all be ashamed of yourselves for believing it. They actually nipped inside to get their own children. Spox: Cops Went In for Their Own Kids During Uvalde Shooting (mediaite.com)
  19. This thread makes me utterly delighted I don't have a telly.
  20. Cruz has shown who he really is countless times. He keeps getting in due to what basically amounts to voter suppression. The texas denizens who would vote against him have either been disenfranchised officially (drug possession conviction = never being able to vote again) or unofficially (hispanics and other african americans tend to have to work so much they can't get the time off to vote). The republicans vote for him because he isn't a "liberal" and because he ascribes to the same performative christianity (talk about taking the Lord's name in vain!) that they do. He also plays a mean dog whistle, and he plays the familiar and soothing music that is right up the streets of white texans. What America needs is another revolution, and I do believe it is slowly happening. The Republicans are moving further into fascism because they're terrified that the inchoate anger of every day Americans is finding some form. The republicans are losing power with the demography of red states beginning to flex its voting muscle. Witness Georgia flipping to Democrat recently, which was no fluke. Stacy Abrams and the Rock The Vote initiative reawakened the latent power of black and latin american voters there and they won't go back in their box. Other states like Arizona and Alabama will follow suit. Young workers are forming Unions and don't buy the "socialism is bad mmkay" narrative which gripped their forebears (it's a quartet of Rangers fans, but never mind that just now). There are obviously reasons to feel jaded and horrified, and especially after recent events, but what we are seeing are the death throws of white conservative America. Guys like Cruz know that their days are numbered.
  21. Tbh a mega chipper sounds fine. Given the portion sizes at the Ashvale I think it qualifies. Huuuuuge bit o fash.
  22. I thought McTom was one of the players Ten Haag wanted to build his team around. I also thought Goldbridge was a sort of footballing Rush Limbaugh/Piers Morgan type provocateur than an ITK talking head.
  23. Getting through is fine, getting back is pretty tight getting to Buchanan Street Aye I forgot about that. There was always an 11.30pm bus that would get me back from the football. The latest one I can see is 10.30pm. That's hellish. I missed out winner against Cyprus as I had to leave early to get that one once. I'm in favour of strike action, and they're doing it at the right time tbf. I would have hoped for more buses though. I fear a lot of empty seats at Hampden.
