  1. Stanton away. I can see the reasoning behind it, he wasn't getting a new contract. I don't see this as weakening the squad as we have signed Powers. Stanton when played in a forward role and attacking looks useful, HOWEVER,  whenever he plays deeper as Neilson (and others to be fair) has played him at times he has been abysmal. Its like playing a man down, the opposition run right through us. Admittedly in his recent games he seems to have improved that part of his game.

Another reason I can see him going is the fact he can hardly train. Does he not do a lot of fitness work in the pool? The ability to work and improve him as a player will be limited due to how little he can train due to his knees.  I doubt he will be able to play a full season Premiership-wise.

I hold no ill feeling towards him and wish him well, he has contributed well to our promotion (hopefully!) this season, but I believe we would need a "stronger" player for next season than Stanton. Wish him well in America and wonder if the warmer climate may help his knees too

Fairly irrelevant when the manager has written him off. See Cammy Smith.

Don't think the manager has written King off, otherwise he wouldn't of signed him in a 3 year deal. He's someone he knows from when King was a youth player at Hearts and was signed to bring on, not as an instant 1st teamer. Smith on the other hand was signed for the 1st team

I think Powers looks like he has the technique to be that player, but judging based on 180 minutes is difficult given the differing circumstances of both matches and both lineups. He has given two displays that have been solid enough to suggest he might have something about him.

Powers has between now and May to show us what he is capable of and with him being here next season it maybe means that he is here at the expense of possibly Stanton (I don't think there has been any chat of him extending his deal).

Lots of chat on another forum that Stanton is away to America.

Powers from what I can read from his career in the states could well be that player. Previous MLS rookie of the year, and certainly at Colorado Rapids extremely highly thought of in doing just that. Will see how he gets on.

Powers was poor today but it’s only his second game for us in a changed formation against a Premiership side so shouldn’t read too much into it.

Shankland isolated today so restricted to one bit of magic.

As soon as I saw the team I thought Shankland would be isolated. That was unless McMullan and Pawlett supported him. Don't know if the formation was to nulify Hibs or to accommodate players, but if we are playing that we really need to close the gap between Shankland & midfield

Powers looks cumbersome, and a bit overweight. Maybe just very solid, but not seeing much about him.

I thought Powers was fine,. didn't.see him look cumbersome at all to me. Looks tidy on the ball and didn't see him do anything wrong. To me he does want the ball, and to play the ball. Also he will be playing to Robbie's instructions. This is his 2nd game in Scotland.

To me the one player who looked really suspect today was McMullan. He always seemed to "tickle" the ball and ended up giving it away, held onto the ball too long and ended up giving it away, or over hit the cross when in a good position. He's needing another kick up the arse as hea been like that for a few weeks again, needs to get back to the play he was producing earlier in the season.

Not convinced by that he has GD.

Only Butcher, Harkes, Shankland and Liam Smith have, to me, been consistently reliable.

Freeman and Powers may prove good signings, but on my doubtful list are Connolly, Nesbitt, Pawlett, Reynolds, (Seaman), Cammy Smith, Sow, A. King and Sporle.

I've maybe missed some players out too.

I'd disagree with you in that list. Reynolds and Connelly both improved the defence.

Pawlett is a good player and has shown this. It was unfortunate that we didn't rest him last season when injured, but I suspect he will be a big player in the run in.

King was signed in a 3 year deal. He is in as back up and one to build up as a player to get him to where he was expected to be by this stage.

Cammy Smith, must be something behind the scenes, Sow has not worked, through injury & its been alluded to off field issues. He won't be here next season unless he does something special between now and May, can't see it though.

Nesbit, keep seeing comments that he was a pointless signing he wasn't. Turned 2 games for us coming off the bench. But for me the big thing about his signing was the impact on McMullan. Nesbitt's signing was a big kick up the arse for McMullan, he had competition for his place and you can track a big improvement in his performances from Nesbitt coming in. For this Nesbitt was a successful signing, not so much on the pitch, but squad wise.

Sporle, for me looks the most technically gifted player we have. Lad has struggled with the language and getting used to being in a completely different environment. As an attacking left sided player I think we'll see the best of him and from next season, we have been a bit "gentle" in bringing him on. Definitely a player there, just not at left back.

As much as Ray was a big player for us, management really isn't his game is it?

Honestly some revisionism right there in that DR Piece. United signed 13 players in Ray's first season, and 11 more in the window before his second season. For him to claim that United didn't financially back him is absolutely rubbish.

Completely true. Not only did he sign that number of players, how many of them had experience at a higher level so would have more than likely been on higher wages.

United heavily backed him, as they have every manager since they have been in Championship.

We were in the Championship with Hibs who were "throwing money at it" level on points at Christmas & then he absolutely shat it and produce a run of form that was relegation-esque.  The performance of the team was seriously poor setup to not lose rather than attempt to win.

I loved Ray as a player, and was quite happy when he became manager, but it just didn't work. As time has.gone on it looks like Ray hasn't learnt from his time at United and has repeated the same mistakes at Falkirk.

Our bench looked really light on Saturday and we’ve had two subsequent injuries.  If Smith goes I hope we are going to bring in a replacement to give us options.

According to another forum, we have two Americans on trial, one being Dillon Power. Seemingly a few others too.

  9. Pawlett for me is an enigma. He is technically good and for me a damn good player.

BUT after a few games last season he got injured. He was rushed back to try and get us 1st place. He looked off the pace and as far as I am concerned was detrimental to the team and to Pawlett himself. He was taking injections to get through games.  This led to him missing the start of preseason.

I thought he was good in the 6-2 game and possibly getting back to what we were expecting & what he is capable of showing, and then another injury.  If he can get and stay fit then I feel he can be a good player for us.

How much of the "must play" at the end of last season, rather than getting him fit has contributed to this season's performances and injuries?

I wasn't giving it what "Dundee done..." It was having a go at those who had before giving it "you done this"  & " you done that". Even had some folk trying to make out certain fanbases are worse than others. I was saying I can do that too and then listed things my side had done. As in big deal, we've all got idiots etc.

I even specifically called out whataboutery by name.

I watched the derby the other night and was surprised how disappointing United looked. They seemed to be lacking any sort of coherent plan.

In Clark and Shankland they have the best two penalty box strikers in the league and in McMullan they have one of the most dangerous wide men in the division yet they didn’t play to their strengths at all. The one time they did play it into the box from a wide area Clark scored a cracking goal.

All fairly irrelevant to this game in which United are clear and obvious favourites, but I just thought I’d share my tuppence worth.

Even if we do make any signings I can’t imagine they will be thrown in from the start. So presumably Kidd will come in for Pybus and Brownlie for Semple if he is fit again.

Totally agree. As soon as the goal was scored they stopped doing everything good & reverted to aimless lobs & punts. The panicked lumps anywhere were inexplicable. I know we hadn't been great for a few weeks but hadn't been that bad. Hopefully its been the kick up the arse they needed, performance wise.

Clark was hobbling when he went off, so hopefully nothing too bad. Performance wise I hope we keep the ball down and play football, we are so much better when we do, rather than long ball crap.

Any form of result would be an improvement on the last game down there for us though.

  12. Sad to see this raising its head again.

Having read through the thread it IS apparant that this IS being used as a "willy waiving" competition, and for me that is extremely sad. "They did this...", "They did that...".

Situation A happens, "we must do something about it". Followed by " yes, but what about unrelated situation B, unrelated situation C etc." Whataboutery - the argument of fuckwits since time immemorial.

I can play that game too..

Adult Dee following & pathetically shouting abuse at my, at the time, 4 yo son because he had a United scarf .

Being jumped in Dundee by 2 Dees after I got back to Dundee from Hampden in 94, kicked in the head, bust my glasses all cowardly from behind, before they ran away.

Hamilton,  not a high point for Dee fans.

I too have witnessed stuff being thrown, racist language and assaults by Dee fans.

Hold on....and then there is us....

Dynamo Moscow, enough said, not a good look.

The ET League Cup final, in a pub opened up early for us, a bus load of Arabs looking like they were "chemically enhanced" & bladdered, pissing in corners and in the puggy machine. Trying to swing on ceiling lights and being abusive to staff. Was utterly embarrassing to be associated with them.

    This incident with Hemmings

League cup group stage at Dens in 2017. Up at the back of the Shankly stand closest to the main stand. Along side the moronic, monotone, repeated to death " Die,die die you b*****d" every so often you'd hear " get that ape" and such like every time Roarie Deacon touched the ball. Shameful.

I've also seen pathetic moronic behaviour from our fans at other times.

This tells us that we have arseholes in BOTH our supports. It is something to be EQUALLY ashamed of. Not a competition to say "your worse than  us". It should be called out. The majority of comments come.fromnthe right place, but less of the "willy waiving".

Sad thing is in the example with Roarie Deacon I think it is, this will sound clumsy do matter how I phrase it so please bear with me, just "something" to shout at an opposition player. Yes it is racist and it should be condemned. As the same voices could be heard at one time shouting

..."get that ape, well done Edge, nice one big man,get that ape!".

Absolutely abhorrent and god only  knows what Edge would have thought about it, never mind Deacon, but what goes through someone's head to think that is acceptable to shout at an opponent.

They certainly weren't young & I believe United were aware of it.

Self policing is a good idea, but in theory a bit difficult to do depending on the situation. In that situation at Dens I was with my son who was 7 at the time. I couldn't just go up to, a number of fans, who had had alcohol, and tell them off.  As it was I placed my scarf over my mouth & did shout "less of the racism"etc when it was shouted by them. But it can be difficult, no one else seemed to be tackling it, it needs a conserted effort.

I do hope the individual is found and given a suitable punishment and at very least banned for a year from all United games. No place at all no matter the reasons for it.

Banter is one thing, but there is a "nastyness" creeping into the rivalry. As a United fan I have friends and relatives who are Dees, same as Dees on here have Arab friends, so we know each other aren't all bad! These people may well be fans of the two clubs but they DO NOT define either of us and never will

  13.  @G_Man1985  Neilson deserves a lot of credit, he built the squad, picks the players etc. Even when not firing on all cylinders we are solid at the back. We may not be spectacular, we have been.at times, but we are consistent and scoring goals ( +28 goal difference) which is what will win the league. I'm happy, promotion is the only thing that matters, performance 2nd.

Seriously, it'll be good to see the ball move naturally! Fingers crossed for a good result, really want to see us have a good result against Ayr.

  15. Wouldn't be in favour of it based on how it has been used in England. The cost would be prohibitive for SPFL clubs, realistically who could afford to put out the amount of money required, other than 2 clubs?

Where I would be in favour is it is ONLY used where "a clear AND obvious error has occured". Someone offside by a few mm or indeed cms does not meet the criteria. Penalty decisions that need watched 5/6 times and still not 100% doesn't meet the criteria. If it comes in and is used as it is in England it will kill the game.

He was definately released and is under no circumstances a Dundee United player.
It could be his settlement to leave, rather than a lump sum we are paying it up over so many months.

My work do this too. They tell me what they will pay me for a year, then they split it into months. They call it wages here.

He is not a registered United player. He has received a pay off settlement. Rather than have all his settlement   in a one go,it has been agreed as part of settlement agreement to be split.  Its a fairly old concept, used by many.

As Aird would not leave without a settlement of his contract this would have been the agreed route, although in my opinion he should have been punted for

    A) impersonating a footballer

    &

    B) his support of orange marches

Teams really were not 'running at £2m a season losses' as a general rule in the second tier, not in the 1990s and not ever. But there's also no sign that financial profligacy has disappeared in recent times either: Inverness ran up an £800k loss in the last campaign; Dundee United recorded a seven figure loss for yet another floundering failure; Dunfermline IIRC lost £200k and Raith lost £400k trying and failing to get into the division.

Clubs are simply getting far less quality for their money than before.

Clubs back them were spending far more money than they were then. United for instance spent transfer fees of £250000, £350000 and £750000 amongst others in the 2nd.teir in 1995/96. Inconceivable now. They weren't the only ones spending 6 figure transfer fees.

Also worth pointing out (yet again!) United's loss isn't just the playing staff it has been infrastructure and repairs as well.

Player's wages as well have gone through the roof by comparison, especially elsewhere, and we cannot compete, made worse when the money from broadcasting is horrendous compared to previously with regards to wages and elsewhere where we struggle to compete

And nostalgia to a lesser extent

Gtf, Robertson was exceptional from day one. Dixon was very good in his first spell and would be among the subs (certainly ahead of Douglas, who was mostly shite) but he's nowhere near Robertson.

Of that exceptional team with Gauld, Ciftci, GMS and Armstrong, Robertson was the most important. No hindsight required.

While I'd agree he was behind Robertson, who surprised everyone as to how good he was and how he progressed while at United, I do think that is unfair on Douglas. Yes he had mistakes (Kilie) but he wasn't mostly shite, he suffered from "not Paul Dixon" syndrome. Dixon had been that good for us anyone replacing him would have been view d with suspicion.

Robertson was truly frightening as to how good he was, especially considering where he came from. I don't mean that in any disrespectful way to Queen's but when Celtic let him go for the typical Scottish football reason of being "too small", I'm amazed no other clubs higher up took him on.  To be fair Queen's Park do have a good reputation for youth.

    Let's get back on track.

    I'm ready for the comments...

    Link

Not too much to disagree with there. Due to how his time finished I feel folk forget Dillon was player of the year one year and at his peak could do a grand job at centre half and midfield.

Rankin is one I would argue with. I found him utterly infuriating. The amount of times he refused to look to his left and missed players in space so he could do the, easier for him, pass to his right to a player surrounded was unbelievable. That and his running towards an opposition player made it look like he was attempting to tackle, even though he was nowhere near. He got the applause from the crowd for trying but to me it looked like a lazy player well off the pace. That's not to say he didn't have good games and didn't make a good contribution at times, but utterly frustrating.

I was a big fan of Daly. Yes he could play the typical centre forward, but he had more to him and was fairly good on the ball. Yes Ciftci, the mad b*****d, was more "flamboyant" and more likely to get fans off their seats, but Daly at his peak was more reliable and more consistent.

Dods was a Ronseal player. He defended. Nothing fancy. Like you was not to excited by his signing but he proved me wrong. He knew his limitations, worked hard and would have been a godsend over the last 5 years.

    Honourable mention to Kovacevic too.

There’s been different reports from different people including McCall, Cameron and Shankland but I don’t know if we received any formal bids in January. We definitely did last summer from Dundee and Fylde but in January it was only inquiries from clubs like yourselves and a few from down South.

Cameron was clear that it would have taken a decent fee and a loan back for it to be accepted and I think that put teams off. Plus Shankland was happy to stay because he would’ve known he’d be a due a decent signing on fee at his next club so a deal was never likely to be done.

    Cheers for that.

We thought exactly the same with Hemmings - it turned out to be the only reason he chose us in the first place. Bang them in in the top flight and get his big move to, um, Oxford.

And then back again in a couple of years. You would have thought if he had any self belief another season of similar returns would have seen him land the potential of a move like Stewart.

  22. 2 minutes ago, D'Jaffo said:

We didn’t receive any bids like 400K last season or he would’ve been off.

OK my mistake, I was under the impression you guys had received a pretty big bid but you thought it was worth rejecting to.seenif you could get promoted.

There was one from us, that wasn't that high, but was Swansea not a good bid?

  23. 2 minutes ago, Dee Man said:

Like I've said elsewhere, if a release clause has been negotiated from Shankland's side there is no need for a move to be sanctioned from above - he can choose to accept an offer from another club once the agreed fee has been met and there is nothing Ashgar or anyone can do about it.

I would hope a man of Asghar's background wouldn't have been so stupid to agree to a rediculously low release fee, especially if you have a player you feel has the potential to be wanted by a number of clubs.

If there is one as low as that then that is incompetent. Although a lot of the "word on the pavey" is off the mark eg Shankland's wages. We'll just have to see what happens & for me hopefully see him celebrating the league win in May.
