The Star Wars thread (includes spoilers for IX)
KingRocketman II replied to Quentin Taranbino's topic in TV and Film Forum
In my view Star Trek is struggling due to the quality of the "primary" show. Discovery, in my view, is awful - a number of escalating problems all under-pinned by show runners sledgehammering home equality type issues and characters as a primary plot device when a) many viewers like myself already are fully on board with the messaging and b) its clumsy and boring especially when compared with any previous Star Trek show that simply subtly promoted equality and focused solely on plot and stories. I really hope Strange New Worlds has different show runners and has a completely different approach to Discovery. By contrast, The Mandalorian and now Boba as the primary SW shows, are in my view, excellent. -

It is a tactic that successive Westminster Govts (and opposition parties) seem desperate to see how far they can out do each other on.

as did a one-on-one chance for Dykes around 15 mins as well as a Robertson cross on a plate for Dykes on 60 mins that he proceeded to headie straight at the goalie. Those were both very good chances from the left hand side as well as you say, the two goals. Notable (With the missed penalty and that header, Dykes should have had a hat-trick)

Truss’s visit is the first by a UK foreign secretary to Russia in more than four years. “I am disappointed that our conversation was the dialogue of a mute person with a deaf person,” Lavrov said. He characterised the closed-door talks as combative and ineffectual and Russian-British relations as being “at their lowest point for many, many years. We appear to listen to each other, but we do not hear each other.” Truss said: “I certainly wasn’t mute in our discussions earlier." -

I laugh at all your performances on here. Which presumably is the reaction you seek.

he made a lot of gay jokes on that Netflix special, as well as a few jokes involving people with disabilities and brain disorders. Not within the context of the Holocaust but jokes that could be considered equally offensive. A lot of rape "jokes" also. Typically for such a thing, I wonder how many of those coming out with a strong opinion on the show have actually seen it. -

Bernard Manning (think now dead?!) and Roy "Chubby" Brown (recent controversy over bookings)are largely seen to be dinosaurs due to their racist/homophobic laden acts that are very much of their time and generation. There remains an audience for that type of show - you can label it fringe or whatever but the Roy Chubby Brown venue cancelling his booking shows he still plays to fairly large audiences. I imagine Jim Davidson also does that. Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle are equally controversial but in a way where the joke is very much on the racist/homophobe but it is delivered in such a way that the target can easily be lost if the line is taken out of context from the persona or performance. They are mainstream "personalties" regardless of how some perceive their acts as pushing the boundaries of taste. For example Carr had an (infamous) gang rape line that (re)emerged during the whole MeToo debate - "a survey found 9/10 people enjoyed gang rape". I have no idea how (or even if he did) add any layers to that but that is just as controversial as the current joke. Basically, comedy and taste is a minefield and the edgier the comedy the more difficult it is to perhaps articulate where you stand on it in terms of something being funny and/or tasteless and/or inappropriate. I therefore think the edges are so blurred and so much more beyond black and white which invariably is what most people try and boil an issue like this down to. A fudged way of saying I can see hy some would be offended by Carr whilst at the same time it is a world apart (in my view) from a Manning/Davidson/Brown line about "Paki's etc etc". -
Just sticking this in here as we build up to the big one!

BBC Radio Scotland's David Porter assessment this morning was that Johnson's performance in the Commons and afterwards in a private Tory meeting last night has won support back from his party and although he not yet "out of the woods" his position is stronger. There are a few "bumps to be negotiated a little further down the road" but blah blah blah.
